Support for Official Brandeis Webpages

Additional Features for your Site

Once you've created a site for the Brandeis web, you may need some additional resources to enhance your site. Below are some tools we've created to help people find you, help you understand who's looking at you, and help you advertise.

Including Calendar Events in YOUR page

We have a tool which will allow you to easily include the events you have added to the calendar into your own web page.

  1. Enter your events into the calendar
Make sure your dept/office is selected as a sponsor of the event.
  2. Go to our Calendar Creation Page and follow the instructions

Site Statistics

Site statistics are a useful tool to identify how many people have been visiting your site, where they are going, and how often they are going there. This aides in determining which of your pages are not receiving enough traffic and should be updated. The statistics will also tell you which search terms and queries people used in their search engines to reach your website. Statistics are generated on a monthly basis and are stored on your website in the stats direcotry. In the stats directory should be a list of directories in the format YYYY-MM (ie 2002-03) signifying year and month. More information and directions on how to sign up for statistics deliver for your department can be found in our FAQ.

Announcements on front page

A popular feature of the Brandeis website is the ability to highlight special upcoming events on the front page. You are able to post your event in the new events and announcements section of the Brandeis front page. This is an easy way to advertise your event to a wider audience and to draw in larger crowds. More information and directions on how to add your event to the front page can be found in our FAQ.

Map (Mapping your department)

The office of Web and Library Application Services designed the online map to be interactive and to allow departments to highlight their building on the map. This highlighted version can be included on the departmental website. If you would like to include a link to your building highlighted on the campus map just follow these steps:

  1. Open the Map
  2. In the top right corner enter the name of your office or building into the search box
  3. A list of possible results will be printed on the screen, click the one that is your office/building
  4. A new window will open with your building highlighted. Copy the URL ( the location of the webpage starting with http:// )
  5. In your web page, paste the URL into the link field (in GoLive that's in the Inspector window, in a text editor you want to paste this into the <a href tag).

Simple Password for Directory Access Restriction

You can setup a directory to be restricted access - to require a password before proceeding. This is very light security - items published on the World Wide Web are out in the open. However, sometimes this is useful for sharing files with a limited set of people. This resource page will give you instructions to setup password protection for your sub-directory, using a method known as htaccess.
