Support for web publishing:

Using Adobe GoLive to Edit Official Brandeis Webpages

Web and Library Application Services (WaLAS) develops and supports the University's public facing websites and intranet sites. WaLAS provides support for website development, web publishing, content management and several web-based applications. The web-development application supported by WaLAS is Adobe GoLive, using secure access to the Brandeis webserver.

Requesting GoLive Installation

Currently Adobe GoLive is available at a discounted education rate for purchase by faculty and staff. For details on the current rate, please consult the special purchasing agreements table.

To request a copy of Adobe GoLive, please use the Software Request form. Staff from the TechDesk will then contact you to arrange an appointment to install Adobe GoLive. If you'd like, please remember to ask them to install GoLive's spellchecker, a tool that may be helpful to you!

Configuring GoLive for use at Brandeis (on-campus and off-campus)

After Adobe GoLive has been installed on your computer, you may want to review that the following configurations have been set on your machine.

Setting default encoding

Because many web developers use the default Western text encoding (known as iso-8859-1) on their personal computers, and because Adobe GoLive defaults to the international standard (known as utf-8), they will need to change a setting on their machines to make sure that unusual characters - such as em-dashes ( - ), acute accents (e.g., é, ú) "smart" quotation marks ( " and " ) - appear properly to the rest of the world.

To change your encoding, which should be a one-time step, please follow these steps:

  1. From the Edit menu bar of the application, select "Preferences"
(Please note, on the Mac, this screen is located under "GoLive › Preferences")

  2. From the list at the left of the Preferences window, click on the item labeled Encodings.

  3. Click on the box labeled Roman to place a checkmark there.

  4. Click on the plus symbol to the left of the checkbox.

  5. Locate the option button to the right of the text iso-8859-1.

  6. Click on the option button to finish changing the default encoding from Unicode (UTF-8) to Roman (Western iso-8859-1).

Setting up a GoLive site file

For those who are used to using the advanced features within Adobe GoLive, you may want to create GoLive site file. Setting up a GoLive site file using WebDAV is a bit complicated, an it involves making the site file locally, copying the files down to your machine, and then re-uploading all of the materials including your site file.

Please follow these directions to set up an Adobe GoLive site file.

If you have been using Adobe GoLive CS2, and have already set up a site file, you should check to make sure that your server is set to use WebDAV, not FTP.

Setting up the connection to the server

If you decide not to use the Adobe GoLive site file (which WaLAS discourages), you'll need to configure a secure server connection.

In order to keep your UNet password secure, any connection to the Brandeis webservers has to occur over secure lines. Within Adobe GoLive, you can achieve this secure access by using what is known as WebDAV server access.

Please follow these directions to set up the Adobe GoLive WebDAV server.
