What To Do About Nuisance Calls

Unfortunately we live in a world where it is legal for marketing firms to call you and solicit your business without your initial consent. Fortunately the FTC regulates this type of business and there are ways to stop nuisance calls. Please note that nuisance calls are different than harassing or threatening calls.

Please report harassment or threats to campus police IMMEDIATELY (3333)!

What To Do if You Receive a Nuisance Call

Should you receive a call from someone you do not know soliciting information from you there are several things you should do.

First

NEVER

give any personal information (SSN, Name, Bank Account, Parents name or address, Birthdate, etc...) even if they appear to be calling from a company you know and trust. There are ways for people to manipulate the caller ID information. If they claim to be from a company you do business with you should get their name and tell them you will call them back. Then find the customer service number for that company on a recent bill or on the back of your credit card and call that number. Do NOT trust them to give you the number or hit redial on your phone!

Second

Interrupt them and tell them that you wish to be removed from their calling list immediately. If they do not listen to you, hang up.

Third

If you receive additional calls from them after telling them not to call you again, you should write down the time and caller ID information and report it to itsvoice@brandeis.edu

Registering on the National Do Not Call List

Brandeis cannot automatically add you to the "Do Not Call" (DNC) list because students are considered residents and the law states that only individuals can register on the DNC list. To register you MUST visit the national Do Not Call website at https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

You cannot register by phone because for personal safety reasons Brandeis does not pass your number via Caller ID and the DNC phone registration system requires the caller ID to match your request.

For more information about the National Do Not Call list please visit their website at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt107.htm

Other Info

In our experience, nuisance calls are usually either automatic sweeps of all 10,000 possible phone numbers, or they obtained your information by other means. However, students who wish to remove themselves from the online directory can do so through Sage
