Computer and Phone Setup

Every student must set up his/her Voice Over IP phone and computer when s/he moves in. There are two basic steps to setting up your phone: plug everything in and register your computer.

This page will give students general information about setting up their phones and computers when they come to campus. Your VOIP phone and computer are the portals to the rest of the Brandeis community and connecting them properly is vital.

Plugging in Your Phone and Computer

LTS has created a video demonstration of this procedure and can be found here. If you have problems viewing the movie, here is the overview of the procedure:

  1. Plug an ethernet cable into the red, green, or yellow (if you're in a triple) jack.
  2. Plug the other end of that cable into the phone's "100/10 SW" port.
  3. Plug the second ethernet cable into the phone's "100/10 PC" port.
  4. Plug the other end of the second cable into the ethernet port of the computer.

Register Your Computer

Users register their computers with the Brandeis network to gain full access to the Internet. Those who do not register will only be able to access their email, course materials, and several other Brandeis network features.

Why do I have to register?

Registration isn't necessary, but if you want access to the Internet, you'll need to register. In the past, Brandeis has been attacked by viruses either brought to campus on an infected computer or installed on an unpatched computer that was on campus. In response, Brandeis forces users to register in order to gain access to the Internet. This response has made computing on campus much safer for all users.

What do I have to do to register?

If you are a Windows user, the registration process has several steps all designed to make sure that you don't have a virus, that your computer can download security updates, and that you have a virus scanner. If you satisfy the qualifications, then you'll be able to access the Internet.

If you are a Mac user, the registration process is completed with the click of a button because Macs rarely have viruses and always are able to download security updates.

Will I have to do this again?

Yes, but you will only have to do it once at the beginning of each school year. If you want to use your wireless card on the secure wireless network, you will have to register it separately. You only have to register each network card once.
