iPod Music Backup (PC)

This webpage will describe how to transfer music from your iPod to your computer. iPods sometimes break, so storing your music on your computer can help in case of a malfunction. It might seem redundant to have the files taking up space both on your iPod and on your hard drive, but that feeling will fade if the iPod needs to be wiped out to repair it (or worse).

What you'll need

This procedure is meant for PC users only. There are similar instructions for Mac users here. You will need a few items to carry out this backup. First, your iPod, USB cable, and computer. Second, you will need to download and install a program called YamiPod. Click on the hyperlink to download and install the program.

Overview of the procedure

We will use YamiPod to copy the music and movies to the iTunes Music folder. Once they are copied, we will add the files to iTunes. If at any time, you are unsure of what to do or something doesn't work as described, please call the UNet Help Desk at 781-529-UNET.

The procedure

Step 1: Download and Install YamiPod

Click on the link above for YamiPod. A website should load; find the link YamiPod for Windows. Click on the link, and when prompted, save the file to your desktop then go to your desktop and locate the new file. It should be named yam-win or yam-win.zip. Double click on this file. You should see something like the screen below.

Click on Extract all files, then Next, Next again, and then Finish.

Step 2: Plug in your iPod

This could be the most important step because your iPod might try to automatically update. If this happens, you could lose all your data. Be careful of what you click on. iTunes should pop up immediately and ask you to sync with its library. Make sure to not sync with the iTunes library. You should see a window that looks like this:

Step 3: Open YamiPod and copy your files to your computer

A window should pop up with two files. YamiPod and Readme. Double click on YamiPod. You should see a screen that looks like the following:

To copy all of the music from your iPod to your computer, first click on "All" in the Artist list. All of the music on the iPod should appear in the list at the bottom.

Now, find the menu along the top of YamiPod and click on the "Song" option. In the drop down menu that appears, click on "Select All". All of your songs should be highlighted in blue as shown above.

Click again on the "Song" option at the top of the screen, and select "Copy To" from the drop down menu. Then, click on the "Destination" button. Double click on "My Music" then double click on "iTunes", then double click on "iTunes Music". Finally, click on the copy button. The music will now transfer to your My Music folder. Close the YamiPod program.

Step 4: Add your files to iTunes

Now, you can use iTunes to sort your files. Launch iTunes, and watch for the following prompt:

Click on edit, and choose "View Preferences". Then, click on the "Advanced" tab. Make sure that the "Keep iTunes Music Folder organized" button is checked. Click "OK", which should return you to the main iTunes screen. Now, click on "File", then "Add Folder to Library", find the "iTunes Music" folder, and click "Ok". iTunes will now import the music into your Music Library and conveniently sort it for you.

Clean Up

Now you can delete the installer files that you downloaded.

Congratulations

You're officially done. If you have any further questions, please call the UNet Help Desk at 781-529-UNET.
