A firewall blocks some kinds of security threats before they reach your computer. A firewall can be a piece of hardware or a software program. Brandeis employs a hardware firewall between the campus network and the Internet, but you should use personal firewall software as well for added protection.
It's generally a good idea for everyone to run firewall software, which offers protection against people attempting to break into your computer over the network. Modern operating systems typically have this software built in.
Windows XP comes with a built-in firewall program which is on by default in Service Pack 2. Users of earlier Windows versions should strongly consider upgrading. Some software automatically installs "exceptions" for itself, which you should probably disallow. To do so, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Windows Firewall. Check the box marked Don't allow exceptions, and click OK.
Mac OS X comes with a built-in firewall. To verify that it is running, go to System Preferences, click Sharing, and click the Firewall tab. If you see Firewall Off, click the Start button. You should also uncheck any checked boxes in the list below.
