Download Safety

Overview

Be careful what you download. It's not a good idea to trust just any piece of software on the Internet, because many "free programs" include viruses or spyware. This kind of software is particularly a problem for Windows users.

A simple Google search for "spyware" and the name of the program you're thinking about downloading will usually tell you whether or not it's safe. If a program specifically says on its website that it doesn't contain spyware or viruses, that's usually a pretty good clue that it is dangerous.

File Sharing

File sharing web sites and networks like eDonkey/eMule/Overnet, Limewire, KaZaA, Ares, BitTorrent are increasingly being seeded by criminals with trojan horse versions of popular files. In addition to the expected program, the file might install software to send spam, remote control your computer, or steal your financial information.

Note that many common peer-to-peer programs are designed to be difficult to disable or uninstall once you're hooked. The University of Chicago has a nice resource for regaining control of your computer in such a case.

Even after you have disabled or uninstalled these programs, software bundled with them can continue to pop up ads, collect email addresses, or even send spam. Most of this bundled software can be eliminated by anti-spyware tools.

Please remember that SHARING/DOWNLOADING COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL IS ILLEGAL!
