Software Downloads

This page explains how to access software that you can download for free from the Brandeis servers.

Overview

Software for the Brandeis community can be obtained from the public software repository. Both Windows and Macintosh software can be had here, and all of it is freeware, shareware, or, as in the case of Symantec Antivirus, commercial software for which Brandeis has a campus-wide license. You'll also find a lot of specialized software for particular coursework. If there is any software here that is required for one of your classes, your professor will let you know.

Connect From On-Campus Using Windows

You can quickly browse the contents of Woodstock with a Web browser by surfing to: http://software.brandeis.edu/. You can download some files this way, but since some installers have multiple files associated with them, it's better to connect using Windows file sharing and then copy the entire directory of the software that you want.
  1. From the Start menu, select "Run...". You will be presented with a prompt, shown below:
  2. At the prompt, enter: \\software\software\ Then click OK.

Feel free to explore all the directories for programs that you might find useful.

Alternate Biology server

There is a server at \\BIO\PUBLIC offering guest-accessible installers using the Windows File Sharing protocol. The exact set of installers on this server is not identical to those on the main Brandeis server.

Connect From On-Campus Using Mac OS X

Mac users can connect to Woodstock via the web at: http://software.brandeis.edu/.

  • At the prompt , enter the address smb://software.brandeis.edu/software then click Connect.
  • Once connected, an icon will appear on the desktop.
  • When you're done with the server, drag the icon to the Trash. In OS X, click on the icon then select File > Eject.
