Wireless Networking at Brandeis
Brandeis University has an extensive wireless network that was installed in the summer of 2005 and updated in 2008. All wired campus buildings have mostly complete wireless coverage. We have also installed wireless access points in many outdoor locations providing coverage between buildings and on the many open space green areas.
LTS provides wireless networking to students faculty staff and researchers so that they have the freedom to work where they want to. Including a quiet spot behind a tree in Fellows Garden, or sitting next to the statue of Loius Brandeis. Wireless coverage in the Libraries allows for the freedom to move through the stacks with your laptop and maintain your network connection.
SSID's
There are 4 SSIDs on the list of available networks.
- brandeis_unet_guest
- Open unencrypted network for guests of Brandeis with basic networking only
- brandeis_unet_wireless
- Open unencrypted network with restricted protocols and support for gaming and non-browser systems
- brandeis_unet_secure
- WPA2 encrypted network with unrestricted access
- brandeis_unet_voice
- Voice device network (Only LTS approved and configured devices)
Secured Wireless Connection
For information on how to connect to the secure network, please see our documentation
here
The wireless network will allow you to connect securely to our campus network. This will allow you to do all of the things that you would normally do with a wired connection. The connection is secured with the WPA2 enterprise specification. For more information on WPA2, please see
the Wi-Fi.org page on WPA2
Your client adapter will need to support this. For more information,
please click here to be taken to our Secure Wireless Connection page. Please be sure to check to see if you have a WPA2 enterprise supported adapter before calling the help desk.
Gaming Devices and other Non-Browser wireless devices
The Brandeis network supports wireless gaming and other non-browser equipped devices (i.e. TiVo, Wii etc.) through a special registration process for more information please see our instructions here.
What to Look For:
The AP's are made by
Aruba Wireless Networks.
We will be installing the Aruba AP70s
Supported Wireless Cards
The wireless network will use 802.11a/b/g protocols. A and G will support up to 54Mbps.
To connect to our secure network you must have a card that is capable of WPA2. Many cards purchased in the last few years should be able to support this. If you have any questions, please check with your laptop or card vendor.
You can also check your card by going
to the wi-fi.org page

Switched Wireless
The Aruba wireless solution uses "thin" APs, meaning that without the wireless controller they do not function. That provides several benefits over "Smart" APs.
- Useless without the controller.
- No configuration stored on the AP
- No encryption keys stored on the AP
- Quick deployment/replacement
- Centralized management and configuration
- Fault tolerant
- Network aware
