Computing On-Campus
Network Access
All residence halls and offices are wired to the University Network (UNet). Each dorm room is equipped with one high speed ethernet connection for each student. When you arrive on campus, LTS staff members will assist you in getting your computer on the network as quickly as possible. Students who use a cable modem or DSL at home should be able to plug their computer right in without changing any computer settings.
Most problems connecting to the network are due to conflicts with settings for online services such as MSN or AOL. If you have AOL installed on your computer, we recommend uninstalling it before you come to Brandeis. You will use your Brandeis account instead for Internet access and email.
Public Computer Clusters
Brandeis students have access to quality public computer labs with networked computers, printers, scanners, CD/DVD burners, and other specialized auxiliary devices. There are over 150 computers available in addition to approximately fifty computers located in departmental labs. The classrooms and clusters are open about 15 hours per day. One cluster is dedicated to student use, and the classrooms are open to students when not being used by classes. For a list of computer and their locations, or to search for computers with specific software, see http://lts.brandeis.edu/apps/crf/
Register Computer on Network
All computers plugged into the wired network are required to register their computer. To do so you will need a UNet account.
Setting Up Your Computer
- Unpack and set up your phone.
- Plug an ethernet cable into your wall in the jack that has been assigned to you. In a double, the red and yellow jacks should be active. In a triple, the green jack should also be active. The gray port is active only on request.
- The cable from the jack in the wall should plug into the bottom of the phone in the port that says "10/100 SW".
- Attach another cable from the port on the phone that says "10/100 PC" to the ethernet jack on the back of your computer.
- Turn on your computer.
- Make sure your computer is set to use DHCP. The Brandeis network will provide all the information to get your computer online automatically. To use DHCP:
For Windows XP:
- Click Start Menu > Control Panel > Network and Dialup Connections.
- Right click on your Local Area Connection and select Properties.
- Select TCP/IP from the list.
- Click the Properties button.
- Select "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically."
- Click OK on all open windows.
- Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Pannel. Open the control pannel and select "Network Connections". There should be no items listed as "network bridge." If there are, delete them or else they will cause your network port to become shut off.
For Windows 2000:
- Click Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel > Network and Dialup Connections.
- Right click on your Local Area Connection and select Properties.
- Select TCP/IP from the list.
- Click the Properties button.

- Click OK on all open windows.
- Restart the computer.
For Mac OS X:
- Click Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network.
- Under the TCP/IP tab select "using DHCP" under the Configure option.
- To access off-campus Internet sites, you must register your computer on the Brandeis network. To do this simply open an Internet browser and go to http://unet.brandeis.edu/ and follow the on-screen instructions. You will be prompted to install antivirus software and the latest security patches.
- Restart your system when prompted.
