Outlook Express




This document will guide you through configuring Outlook Express to access your Brandeis email account on a computer running Windows 98, Me, NT, 2000, or XP.

Outlook Versus Outlook Express



Despite their similar names, Microsoft Outlook 2002/2003/XP are very different programs from Microsoft Outlook Express. Brandeis only supports the use of Outlook Express.

Configuring Outlook Express



Step 1

  • Before you begin, it is important that you have the latest version of Outlook Express installed on your computer. Visit the Microsoft Windows Update site and choose Express Install. Follow the on-screen instructions to update all your Microsoft software to the latest version, including Outlook Express.

Step 2

  • Open the Tools menu, and click Accounts.
  • Click the Add button on the right side of the window.
  • Select Mail... from the list that appears.

  • Enter your name as you would like it to appear on messages you send.
  • Click the Next button.

Step 4

  • Enter your UNet username followed by @brandeis.edu.
  • Click the Next button.

Step 5

  • Click on POP3 and select IMAP from the list that appears. The first line should read "My incoming mail server is a IMAP server."
  • Under Incoming mail server, enter imap.brandeis.edu.
  • Under Outgoing mail server, enter mail.brandeis.edu.
  • Click the Next button.

Step 6

  • Your UNet username should already be filled in under Account name. If not, enter it yourself. Be sure not to include @brandeis.edu at the end.
  • Uncheck the box next to Remember password.
  • Be sure the Secure Password Authentication box is not checked.
  • Click the Next button.

Step 7

  • Click the Finish button.
  • You are not really finished yet! Please read on.

Step 8

  • Click the Properties button on the right side of the window.
  • Click the Servers tab at the top of the window.
  • Check the box next to My server requires authentication.

Step 9

  • Click the Advanced tab at the top of the window.
  • Check both boxes next to This server requires a secure connection.
  • Next to Outgoing mail (SMTP), enter 465.
  • Next to Incoming mail (IMAP), 993 should already be filled in. If not, enter it yourself.

Step 10

  • Click the IMAP tab.
  • Uncheck the box next to Check for new messages in all folders.
  • Next to Sent Items path enter sent-mail.
  • Click the OK button.
  • Click the Close button on the bottom right side of the window.

Step 11

  • Click the Yes button when asked if you would like to download folders from the mail server.

Step 12

  • Enter your UNet password in the window that appears and click the OK button.
  • Click the OK button.

  • Open the Tools menu, and click Options.
  • Click the Send tab.
  • Uncheck the Automatically put people I reply to in my Address Book box.

Step 14

  • Click the Maintenance tab.
  • Check the Purge deleted messages when leaving IMAP folders
  • Click the OK button.

Step 15

  • On the left side of the window is a list of folders. Look for Inbox under the heading imap.????.brandeis.edu.
  • Click Inbox.
  • A list of messages appears on the top right side of the window.
  • Click the name of a message.
  • The message text appears on the bottom right side of the window.

Brandeis Directory and Outlook Express

If you are using a computer from on campus, you can configure Outlook Express to use the Brandeis Directory. The directory is currently not supported for off campus users.
