Open a Brandeis email account (also known as a UNet account). You'll need this for email, of course, but also so that you can gain access to campus teaching, advising, and payroll resources. New faculty initially open a sponsored email account, which is converted over to a full account at the start of their first teaching semester. Directions for opening a sponsored email account are on the account creation page.
Sort out your email access. We recommend using the Bmail web client, but if you wish you may also configure an email client on your computer. Click here for instructions.
Get started creating LATTE courses for your classes. LATTE is Brandeis's course management system, or Learning And Teaching Technology Environment, which most faculty use in conjunction to their classroom teaching to post assignments, grades, readings, quizzes, hold outside of class discussions, and otherwise enrich the learning experience. Lots more on LATTE is available here.
Make sure your department has arranged for an office computer for you. Departments almost always take care of this well before you arrive, but it doesn't hurt to contact your department administrator and make sure.
Open a calendar account. Many Brandeis faculty and staff use Oracle Calendar to manage their schedules and set up meetings. Your department administrator will know if you need a Calendar account. You can request an Oracle Calendar account here. Oracle Calendar will come installed on your Brandeis-provided office computer, but you can download the software here, or access Calendar through its web client at http://calendar.brandeis.edu.
Obtain access to your department's network share on the Omega server. Not all departments have a departmental share, but your department administrator will know. To gain access to your department's share, ask your department administrator to request access on your behalf by contacting the Help Desk.
Set up your voice mail. Brandeis faculty and staff receive a Brandeis telephone, phone number, and voice mail. You'll want to record your own voice mail message; directions are available here.
Learn about off campus computing resources. Many faculty members work from home some of the time, so it's helpful to know how to connect to campus resources from off campus. You can check out our off campus computing pages here.
Become more aware of computer security. There's lots to know about staying safe and protecting your information online. For information about how to protect yourself and our campus community, click here.
