What were the criteria for choosing the Fall 2008 IPTV channels?

History

In Spring 2005, LTS initiated an IPTV pilot of four channels to evaluate the possiblity of offering cable TV programming via the campus data network. Students, faculty, and staff offered feedback on the Web and via a series of myBrandeis polls organized by LTS, SITAC, and the Student Union. By Fall 2006 two conclusions emerged. First, opinion on IPTV was divided. While many Brandeis students appreciate the convenience of TV viewing on their computers, others prefer traditional cable TV service for social and picture-quality reasons. Second, poll respondents agreed they would be more likely to watch IPTV if more channels were offered.

For the present, both traditional cable TV (featuring the full complement of 80-plus channels) and IPTV (featuring eight selected channels) are available on the Brandeis campus. In an agreement between LTS and the Student Union, a BigPulse poll will run semesterly to vote on the IPTV channels for that semester.
