Installation Instructions
Description of the Software
SPSS, (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), is a data management and analysis product produced by SPSS, Inc., featuring modules for statistical data analysis, including descriptive statistics such as plots, frequencies, charts, and lists, as well as sophisticated inferential and multivariate statistical procedures like analysis of variance (ANOVA), factor analysis, cluster analysis, and categorical data analysis.
Brandeis offers a limited number of individual licenses of SPSS 19 for students, free of charge. Students looking for the software should visit http://software.brandeis.edu/SPSS/For%20Students/. For staff and faculty, a site license is available for campus use which can be downloaded off of the university file share, \\omega\spss-installer.
Join the Local User Group and Mailing List
Questions about the use of SPSS should be directed to the Brandeis SPSS User Group. If you would like to join the local Brandeis SPSS User Group, email user group coordinator Graham Wright at spss@brandeis.edu.
Ask to join the Brandeis-Boston SPSS User Group mailing list:
- Click on the following link: https://lists.brandeis.edu/wws/subrequest/spss-users
- Brandeis community members: enter your UNet ID in the email address field, hit submit, and enter your UNet password in the subsequent password field.
- Off campus users: enter your email address in the email address field and hit submit.
- Your request to join will be forwarded to the SPSS User Group coordinator and an email will be sent to you when you are added to the list.
How to Install SPSS
Students:
Visit http://software.brandeis.edu/SPSS/For%20Students/ for the installer (if you are off-campus you will need to use wormhole), go.brandeis.edu/spss and fill out the form, and then contact the Help Desk in Goldfarb Library to receive your individual license code for SPSS 19, free of charge on a first come first served basis.
Staff/Faculty:
On Campus
The installation files for SPSS are located on the University's file server, Omega.
- Click here for instructions on how to connect to Omega.
- Find the folder titled, "spss-Installers."
- Open the folder, and double click on the installer file you need.
- If you just need to renew your copy, please skip to step 9.
- Enter your password, if prompted, to continue.
- Select "Site license" and click Continue.
- Accept the terms of the license agreement and click continue. Click continue again.
- Enter a username and organization. Leave serial number blank. Click continue twice. Then click Install.
- After the installation, run the SPSS License Authorization Wizard. Select License my product now and click Next. Click next again and enter the authorization code found in the PDF. 2010 to 2011 SPSS License Code. Click next to authorize using the internet (should be the default option). Click next again when it has finished, then click finish. SPSS will now be ready to use.
Off Campus
- Visit wormhole.brandeis.edu and login in.
- Click the link towards the bottom of the page that is titled, "Omega."
- Click the folder that is called SPSS installer.
Check the box next the version you need (Windows 32-bit, Windows 64-bit, or Mac). Click the download button, then proceed as follows:
1. Double-click on SPSS Installer. Enter your password, if prompted, to continue
2. Select "Site license" and click Continue.
3. Accept the terms of the license agreement and click continue. Click continue again
4. Enter a username and organization. Leave serial number blank. Click continue twice. Then click Install.
5. After the installation, run the SPSS License Authorization Wizard. Select License my product now and click Next. Click next again and enter the authorization code found in the read-me file. Click next to authorize using the internet (should be the default option). Click next again when it has finished, then click finish. SPSS will now be ready to use.
