Wormhole is Brandeis's SSL VPN. In geekspeak, an SSL VPN is a "Virtual Private Network using Secure Socket Layers for encryption". In English, this is a tool that allows you to securely access resources on the Brandeis network when you are off campus. With Wormhole you can connect to your UNet filespace and the Omega fileserver, browse certain websites otherwise restricted to on campus use such as BUSS, and even connect to your office computer from home. All communication using Wormhole is securely encrypted between your computer off campus and the VPN gateway at Brandeis. The encryption is the same as is used for online banking and shopping, so it's very secure. Special software is not required for Wormhole; it works through your web browser.
To log in to Wormhole, visit https://wormhole.brandeis.edu. You will need your UNet username and password to log in. Detailed instructions are available here.
Connect to Servers You can use Wormhole from off campus to access files stored in your UNet home space or departmental shared folders on the Omega fileserver. You can create files and save them on the server, and you can read or edit existing files.
Set up Remote Desktop Connection to my office computer. Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) is a feature of Wormhole that allows you to remotely connect to your work computer. Using Wormhole to connect remotely offers security through encryption and convenience by simplifying the configuration of your workplace computer. (If you used one of the older methods for remote desktop connection, you will appreicate that it is no longer necessary to configure multiple ip addresses if you access your work computer from more than one location.) To set up Wormhole's Remote Desktop Connection feature, Windows XP users should follow these instructions and Mac users should follow these instructions. If you are a Windows user, due to security concerns we require that you have the Windows firewall turned on and set to block unrestricted access. Remote Desktop Connection from off campus is only permitted using the Wormhole SSL VPN.
Browse Brandeis websites restricted to on-campus access You can use Wormhole to browse Brandeis websites from off-campus even if the site is otherwise restricted to on campus access. Just use the Browse box at the top of the web page.
Customize your Wormhole home page You can configure Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) sessions, web bookmarks, and specific file share links right on your individual Wormhole homepage. That way, you will have them available every time you connect.
