Using the HTML Creator in WebCT Vista


About the HTML Creator

The HTML Creator is a Java-based applet that allows you to create content in HTML without entering HTML tags. Similar to a word processor, you can

  • enter text and format it using the buttons in the toolbar
  • spell check your text
  • insert bookmarks to web pages
  • insert accented characters (e.g., á, Ö Ç)
  • create bulleted lists or numbered lists

The HTML Creator is available is available* from the following tools:

  • Assessments
  • Assignments
  • Discussions
  • Mail

* Please note that on Mozilla-based browsers (e.g., Mozilla Firefox 1.x, Mozilla Suite 1.x, Netscape Navigator 7.x/8.x, and Mac's Safari 1.x/2.x) the HTML Creator toggle on/off button does not appear, meaning that you cannot use the HTML editor with these browsers. Using the HTML Creator

To turn on the HTML creator, click the radio button in the field "HTML Creator" from "Off" to "On."*

* Please note that on Mozilla-based browsers (e.g., Mozilla Firefox 1.x, Mozilla Suite 1.x, Netscape Navigator 7.x/8.x, and Mac's Safari 1.x/2.x) this toggle on/off does not appear. More information is available from this WebCT discussion board.

Once activated, the Java applet will load, and you will see an interface that looks like this:

Quick Overview of Buttons

The buttons and dropdowns that are presented on this screen match most word-processing programs, such as Microsoft's Word. Here's a quick overview:

  • Clipboard icon: Paste something you copied from your computer (such as something you wrote offline)
  • First Dropdown selection menu: Apply formatting style built in to most browsers
  • Second Dropdown selection menu: Change font to Arial, Courier, or Times
  • Third Dropdown selection menu: Change font point size to make font larger or smaller
  • B Button: Set as boldfaced
  • I Button: Set as italicized
  • U Button: Set as underlined
  • A Button: Change the font color

Adding images using the HTML Creator and your UNet webspace

Step 1: Upload the image to the WWW folder of your UNet webspace

Please replace unetid with your UNet ID, and filename.jpg with the name of the file.

Insert this code in the Source tab


Switch back to the WYSIWYG tab to "see" the image.
