Language Faculty FAQ

Where do I go for help with technology in my teaching?

Use of technology in teaching is supported at Brandeis by the Research & Instructional Services group of Library and Technology Services. RIS staff can help you apply technology in a lot of interesting ways that can benefit your teaching. Contact us for more information (e-mail ris@brandeis.edu).

Research & Instructional Technology services can assist you with language-specific software.

How do I put things on-line for my course?

Research & Instruction Services will help you put just about any type of media or document on-line in a LATTE course. LATTE is Brandeis' online learning environment. In addition to making media sharing simple, LATTE also comes with other features than can help your teaching: chat rooms, discusson forums, an online assignment drop box,  and more.

How do I set up a LATTE course?

LATTE courses are automatically created before every semester. You decide whether you want to use your LATTE course and make it accessible to your students. To log in to LATTE go to http://latte.brandeis.edu.

If you'd like to have an introduction to using LATTE, visit the Faculty Resource Center at the Main Library (Goldfarb Library, Level 1).

What are on-line language files, and how do I make them available to my students?

Research & Instruction Services staff are happy to make audio materials that accompany your language textbooks available for your students on-line. To do this, we first seek permission from the textbook publisher, then we digitize the files and put them in the proper form to stream from our QuickTime streaming media server. Virtually all the language materials accompanying language textbooks in use at Brandeis are currently already on-line: they simply need to be added to your LATTE course.

How do my students access on-line language files?

When  the language files are added to your LATTE course, enrolled students automatically have access. Once in the course, they click on the link to the language files to find a list of the chapters or sections of the series. Clicking on an individual chapter causes it to begin playing.

Students do need to have the free QuickTime Player software installed on their computer to hear the files. A link to this free software is available on the LATTE help pages. This software is already installed in all the library computer clusters and the Facutly Resource Center. Headphones can be checked out from the Goldfarb Library listening desk.

If students have problems accessing LATTE or hearing the language files, please direct them to contact  LATTE Help (latte@brandeis.edu or x64739). Additionally, we keep local copies of all on-line language files in the unlikely event of a network outage or LATTE failure.

How can I have an AV projectionist show a video for me?
