Language Student FAQ

This information is intended to answer most questions involving student technology use for Brandeis foreign language courses. If your question isn't answered below, please contact the Feldberg, Karp, Levy & Stern Faculty Resource Center, your resource for class-related technology use.

How do I spell-check in foreign languages?

Foreign-language spell checking is enabled in all the Brandeis computer classrooms and clusters. For a list of clusters and locations, browse to http://lts.brandeis.edu/apps/crf/. Most languages taught at Brandeis are supported, as well as several additional languages. Special note: Russian language spell-checking is disabled in the clusters and classroom because it interferes with a special Russian keybord installed at the request of Faculty.

Steps for spell-checking foreign languages in Word (PC & Mac):

  1. Highlight the section you wish to spell check in the desired language.
  2. On the menu bar, Go to tools > Language >Set language.
  3. Scroll down to find the desired language in the dialog box and choose it. This marks the language of the text. Click "OK."
  4. On the menu bar, go to Tools > Spelling and Grammar to activate the spell checker. You may receive a dialog box saying MS Word cannot find the grammar file for the desired language. Since you need a spelling, not a grammar check, ignore this and click "OK" to activate the spelling file.
  5. Operate the spell check in the desired language the same as you would the English spell check.
Steps for foreign language grammar checking in Word (PC & Mac):
  1. Highlight the section you wish to spell check in the desired language.
  2. On the menu bar, Go to tools > Language >Set language.
  3. Scroll down to find the desired language in the dialog box and choose it. This marks the language of the text. Click "OK."
  4. On the menu bar, go to Tools > Spelling and Grammar to activate the spell checker and grammar checker. If the grammar checker does not begin automatically, be sure the small, left-hand "check grammar" box is selected.
  5. At this point, the grammar checker will go through the text of your document asking you to either correct, ignore, or suggest new spelling and grammar. Clicking "resume" will bring you back to the beginning of the document.

How do I listen to streaming on-line audio files?

Most of the language courses at Brandeis now use streaming, on-line audio files. These files are accessible through LATTE, if your professor has  requested LTS staff to make the files available (contact LATTE Help if you have any questions about whether these online files are in your LATTE course) .

To hear your language files once they have been made available, you'll need to log on to LATTE and enter your language course. You'll need to have the free QuickTime player installed on your computer. You can download this player from Apple at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/.

You can use the computers in all the Brandeis computer clusters and classrooms to access online files, as all computer clusters have the QuickTime player installed. Headphones can be checked out from the Goldfarb Library listening desk for computer clusters and classrooms in Goldfarb and Farber libraries. Most students prefer to set up their own computers to access these files, and in general have little difficulty. However, some students have had trouble configuring their personal computer correctly. If you still have trouble accessing the files please contact LATTE Help.

Where can I watch foreign language cable channels?

Any cable-ready TV connected to the Brandeis cable television network will allow you to view the foreign language cable channels. A list of all Brandeis channels is available here. Foreign language channels are also listed below.  Also, there is a TV with cable located in the Farber group study room on level 1 of the Farber library.  Students who need to watch foreign language channels for classes have priority use of the room.

How do I watch a video for my language class?

Language videos are maintained in the Goldfarb Library by the Brandeis Library and Technology Services. Videos are included in the library catalog and are searchable through LOUIS. If a tape from the collection is assigned in your course, your instructor should either make it available on reserve through the Goldfarb Library circulation desk, schedule a special showing for your class, or make it available online through LATTE. Your instructor should explain to you which of these methods she or he has chosen.

If the video tape is put on reserve, you'll be able to watch the video in the library at your convenience. To search the Goldfarb Library Reserve collection, click here. For hours and other general library information, consult the Brandeis Library and Technology Services homepage at http://lts.brandeis.edu/.

If your instructor has scheduled a special showing of the video for your class, the video may not have been placed on reserve, or it may be checked out temporarily so it can be shown. Your instructor should inform you of the date and place of any special video showing he or she has arranged.
