Assessment of Student Learning:
Radical Implications of the New Science of Learning

What is “critical thinking” or “deep understanding”? How can it be measured?  What do standardized tests and other educational assessments measure? How do these assessments relate to research in the cognitive and brain sciences? Zachary Stein, an expert in the field of Mind, Brain, and Education, will share key advances in teaching and learning research and lead us in some myth busting along the way!

10am to Noon The new science of learning: how we got here
A brief historical overview of current educational assessments

  • Issues in psychometrics.
  • Key advances in cognitive science, developmental psychology, and neuroscience
  • Forging radically new approaches to educational research and assessment.

1:30 – 2:30 Models and Metaphors: which are the "keepers"?

  • Models and metaphors that have driven pedagogy and assessment
  • Exploring ways to support student-centered, metacognitive learning

2:30 - 3:30 From research to practice
The new science of learning centers mostly on lab research. Applying research findings is not a straightforward affair.
In this session we look to extract some general principles for making the transfer from research to practice.
