About Government Documents at Brandeis University

Brandeis has been a selective depository for U.S. government publications since 1967. The Documents Collection, which is located behind the reference area on the main floor of Goldfarb Library, primarily includes materials published since that date. It is shelved according to the Superintendent of Documents classification system, which arranges materials by government agency. The library currently receives approximately 33% of the available items for selection from the Government Printing Office. These publications are made available to the Brandeis academic community as well as the general public. Some foreign and international government publications are cataloged as part of the library's general collection.

U.S. documents from 1989 to the present may be located by searching LOUIS, the library's online catalog. LOUIS may also be used to locate any government serial (e.g., Monthly Labor Review, Survey of Current Business, etc.) regardless of publication date. Earlier documents must be located using special indexes such as the Monthly catalog of the U. S. government printing office (GPO) via FirstSearch (Brandeis users only) in conjunction with an in-house shelf list or by consulting with a reference librarian. In addition to a substantial collection of paper materials, the library also collects materials in microfiche and CD-ROM formats. Many government documents, like the ones listed on this page, are now available on the World Wide Web.

Most documents circulate, and can be checked out at the Main Circulation Desk. For assistance with government publications, please visit or call 781-736-4670 and ask to speak with a reference librarian.
