This guide presents a selective list of basic electronic and print resources necessary for undertaking research projects in the fine arts (sculpture, drawing, design, painting, printmaking, and engraving), the decorative and applied arts (such as arts and crafts, furniture, ceramics, and textiles), architecture, and photography. Note that some sources cover all of the visual arts, including architecture and photography, while others are more limited in scope. There may be other specialized resources appropriate for your research -- please contact the Creative Arts Librarian, Darwin F. Scott, for additional assistance. Citations for materials listed in the guide are limited to title and call number only. For complete descriptions, see the full bibliographic record in LOUIS, the Brandeis Libraries' online catalog. Comprehensive coverage of all countries, periods, and cultures. Includes lengthy, detailed articles on broad historical, conceptual/systematic, and geographical topics by an international group of specialists. Use the analytic dictionary/index in vol. 15 to locate information on specific topics. The second half of each volume presents plates of key works discussed in the essays. Extensive bibliographies end each article. Vols. 1-15 issued in installments from 1959 to 1968; vol. 16 ("World Art in Our Time," 1983) and 17 ("New Discoveries and Perspectives," 1987) present important supplements with separate indexes. Despite its age, this entire encyclopedia remains an essential resource for art research.

Vol. 1 (Artists) provides articles on the most important artists from the 13th to the 20th centuries. Each article presents essential facts on the artist's career; the most important public and private collections of the artist's work; a bibliography of books and articles on and by the artist; and a critical essay discussing the historical and critical aspects of the artist's work. In roughly chronological order, vol. 2 (Art) presents articles and reproductions of ca. 500 individual artworks regarded as the acknowledged masterpiece or a representative work of each selected artist.

Offers a combination of historical material and critical discussions of contemporary aesthetics, defined as "critical reflection on art, culture, and nature." Includes hundreds of alphabetically arranged essays on individuals, concepts, periods, theories, issues, and movements in the history of aesthetics, ranging from the Greco-Roman era to the present and written by philosophers, art historians, literary theorists, psychologists, feminist theorists, legal theorists, sociologists, and anthropologists. Articles conclude with good bibliographies of primary and secondary sources. Coverage of most major art forms appears in composite entries arranged under one headword, combining conceptual and historical overviews with in-depth analyses of issues and ideas. A step-by-step guide to the basic and specialized resources for art research available in electronic and print formats, with an emphasis on English-language publications and Web sites. Organized into 3 parts: basic information formats; types of Web sites and how to locate them; and how to use and supplement Web information (with outstanding sections on basic research methodology; art historical styles, periods, and cultures; locating material on artists and art collectors; analyzing the form and subjects of art works; resources for architecture, decorative arts, fashion, graphic arts, photography, and sculpture; North American, Canadian, and Native American studies; and non-European cultures). A guide to the methodology and print resources of art research to be used in tandem with the later version Art Information and the Internet (1999; see above). Although the sections on online resources are now superseded, the more detailed and complete descriptions of the print resources still make this edition essential. Useful appendices include multilingual dictionaries and glossaries in French, German, and Italian that supply English equivalents for words frequently appearing in non-English art publications, and for art terms, proper names, geographic locations, terms denoting time and number, and names of animals.

In addition to artist information, AskART also provides directories of museums, dealers, auction houses, and professional organizations and a glossary of art terms. Although this site offers fee-based services through optional registered membership, access to the artist and museum information is free.
Contemporary Artists
Offers thorough profiles of over 800 of the most significant artists of the later 20th century working in painting, graphics, sculpture, mixed media, and performance, video, and computer art. Entries include biographical data, comprehensive lists of individual exhibitions, selected lists of important group exhibitions, public collections that include works by the artists or permanent public installations, primary and secondary bibliographies, personal statements (when available), and critical essays. Many entries also feature illustrations.

The Trustman Collection of Honoré Daumier Lithographs
One of the world's greatest collections of lithographs by the French artist Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) amassed by Benjamin A. and Julia M. Trustman and given to Brandeis University. Its ca. 4,000 images of mid 19th-century Parisian social criticism and political commentary represent virtually every lithographic work created by Daumier. The entire collection is now available online.
