Subject encyclopedias and dictionaries

Subject encyclopedias provide a broad overview of the current research on a particular topic and a short list (bibliography) of key resources.

General Anthropology

Anthropological Glossary
Very brief definitions of anthropological terms including specific ethnic groups, archaeological objects, particular rituals, etc. No bibliographic references.

Encyclopedia of World Cultures
This 10-volume encyclopedia provides summary overviews of specific cultures by region of the world, with sections on ethonyms, orientation, history, settlements, economy, kinship, marriage and family, sociopolitical organization, religion and expressive culture, and a bibliography. Summaries written by experts or researchers at the Human Relations Area Files. Each regional volume contains an introduction, maps, a glossary and filmography on that region. Volume 10 includes a list of cultures by country, an ethonym index, and a subject index.

Archaeological Method and Theory: An Encyclopedia
This new encyclopedia focuses on the practice and discipline of archaeology. A useful Subject Guide is found at the beginning of the volume. Many articles are illustrated, and each article is followed by a list of further reading. Subject and name indexes.

Finding books

LOUIS, the online catalog of the Brandeis Libraries, is the principal means of locating books in the library collections.

LOUIS can be useful at two levels of your research:

  • If you have already identified the books you need, search LOUIS by title or by author.
  • If you are trying to identify books that will be useful for your research, search LOUIS by subject or keyword.
How to locate a book in the library
Tozzer Library (HOLLIS catalog)
Harvard's HOLLIS catalog includes the holdings of Tozzer Library, a major repository of anthropological materials with a specialty in the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Non-Harvard patrons cannot borrow books from Tozzer, but are allowed up to 6 free visits per year.

Anthropology Plus
An index to articles on all anthropological topics that combines Anthropological Literature from Harvard University and Anthropological Index, Royal Anthropological Institute from the UK. Despite the very limited search capability, it contains extensive coverage of scholarly journals from the late 19th century to the present.

Anthropological Index Online
Index to journal articles from the Anthropology Library at The British Museum, 1957-present. The content is now included in Anthropology Plus, above, but the search interface is better.
Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts
Covers the study of language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Complete coverage is also given to various fields of linguistics including descriptive, historical, comparative, theoretical and geographical linguistics.
Art Abstracts
Indexes periodicals, exhibition listings, museum bulletins, yearbooks, interviews, competition and award notices, and book and film reviews in more than 250 key international, mostly English-language journals in the visual arts, 1984 to present

Vast collection of images and related data covering many time periods and cultures. Documents the fields of architecture, painting, sculpture, photography, decorative arts, and design, as well as many other forms of visual culture. JSTOR
Indexes and provides full-text to the older issues of over 100 scholarly journal titles from most disciplines, 1800s to the recent 2-5 years. Select the Anthropology module to search all available anthropology journals at once.
Social Sciences Abstracts
Indexes a wide variety of social science journals, including those on anthropology. Indexing from 1983, abstracting from 1994.
Web of Science
Offers both journal and citation searching, and includes the social sciences and humanities as well as the sciences. If you know one or more key articles in your area of interest, use Cited Reference Search to find later articles that have cited those key works. An electronic collection of over 4,000 non-copyrighted map images that can be viewed or downloaded, and links to other map sites.
C.I.A. maps and atlases
A selective series of maps produced by the Central Intelligence Agency, many of them of individual countries. Note: because they are U.S. Government documents they are not copyrighted and can be reproduced without paying royalties.
