MLA International Bibliography an essential database for anyone conducting research in the fields of literature and language, MLA International Bibliography indexes scholarly articles, journals, books and dissertations covering topics in literature, modern languages, linguistics, folklore, and dramatic arts as well as the historical aspects of printing and publishing. The indexed materials coverage is international in scope and coverage is from 1926 to the present. 

MLA International Bibliography is produced by the Modern Language Association (MLA) and some of its key features include:

LTS is pleased to offer ebrary, a new collection of approximately 40,000 electronic books with full-text searching across the collection. Using ebrary, it is possible to create persistent links to individual titles, chapters and pages. American Memory is a multimedia website that provides a gateway to over nine million digitized items significant in American history and culture, including manuscripts, sound recordings, photographs, posters, ephemera, maps, books, and other material from the Library of Congress and other institutions. Browse topics such as religion, U.S. presidents, immigration, the environment, African American history, women's history, and many others, or browse collections by time period, place, or type of material.

Accessible Archives is an online database that offers searchable, full-text access to primary source materials from 18th and 19th century American newspapers, periodicals, and county histories providing firsthand knowledge about the critical periods of colonial America. Resources included are African American Newspapers: The 19th Century; The Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective; The Charleston South Carolina Gazette; The Liberator; The Pennsylvania Gazette; The Pennsylvania Genealogical Catalogue; The Pennsylvania Newspaper Record; American County Histories to 1900; and Godey's Lady Book.

ARTstor announces a collaboration with Magnum Photos which brings thousands of images by world-renowned photographers to the ARTstor platform. Founded shortly after World War II, Magnum Photos International is a cooperative owned by 80 leading documentary photographers, many of whose images have now become iconic representations of the defining moments in 20th century and contemporary life. These photos are relevant across the curriculum, ranging from arts to humanities to social sciences, and to all other areas of study impacted by the major world events and personalities who have shaped our lives. Together, the Ethnic NewsWatch and Ethnic NewsWatch: History databases provide interdisciplinary and comprehensive, full-text coverage of important ethnic, minority, and native press publications, spanning over 40 years with nearly 1.9 million articles. With titles dating from 1990, Ethnic NewsWatch provides access to over 315 newspapers, magazines, and journals with viewpoints and perspectives that are unique from that which is presented in the mainstream press. The retrospective companion database, Ethnic NewsWatch: A History, provides the historical background to the content in Ethnic NewsWatch, with over 300,000 articles dating from 1959-1989.

Ethnic groups represented include: African American/Caribbean/African; Arab/Middle Eastern; Asian/Pacific Islander; European/Eastern European; Hispanic; Jewish; Multi-Ethnic; Native People. LTS now offers RSS feeds of new print and electronic books in the Brandeis University libraries. You can pick one or more subject areas and receive regular listings of new titles added to the LOUIS catalog.

The new title RSS feeds can either be read in the RSS reader or web browser of your choice, or they can be sent to a particular folder in Bmail.

These subject lists of new titles can also be viewed on LOUIS at any time; just click on the "New Books" tab. The lists are updated daily. Titles to be included are new to the Brandeis library and published within the past two years. They remain on the list for 45 days.

A full alphabetical list of new print and electronic titles is available as well and replaces the previous New Books search.



Online Reference Collections Provide Quick Overviews!

Brandeis students, faculty, and staff now have access to five authoritative electronic reference collections, including hundreds of dictionaries, handbooks, specialized encyclopedias, and other reference works. These reference works are from trusted sources and are often critically acclaimed. These collections include:


Verify facts, get definitions, find concise background information on such topics as Iran-Contra, the Berlin Wall, John Steinbeck or the New Deal, to name just a few of the millions of topics available.

New Special Collections research guide available

The Robert D. Farber University Archives & Special Collections department, located on level 2 of Goldfarb, houses the gems of the Brandeis library. A new research guide to Special Collections introduces users to the rare book and original manuscript holdings and answers many questions students, faculty, and other researchers might have about finding and using the material. The research guide includes a list of suggested collections divided by subject, making it easy to see which materials might have relevance to various fields of study or teaching.

Special Collections consists of both rare books and original manuscripts. The rare book collection includes incunabula; books published in the 16th - 18th centuries on such subjects as history, English and American literature, philosophy, and Judaica; first and limited editions; and fine press publications. Book collections of note include the Baldwin Shakespeare collection and the McKew-Parr Collection on Magellan and the Age of Discovery. Special Collections also holds literary manuscripts of European and American authors such as John Cheever and Joseph Heller, as well as music collections and photographic collections. In addition, it includes collections of materials on the Spanish Civil War, left- and right-wing movements in the United States in the latter half of the twentieth century, anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, twentieth-century anti-alien and anti-radical movements in the United States, and Zionism. The department also includes the papers of prominent political figures such as Louis D. Brandeis, Benjamin Disraeli, and Daniel Webster.

Newspapers can be viewed in their "true" page layout including photographs, advertisements and other images, or in a text-based view. Several newspapers include an "interactive radio" option to hear the stories being read aloud.

American History in Video provides a rich source of over 2,000 hours of online video for the study of American history. It includes commercial and governmental newsreels, archival footage, public affairs footage, and important documentaries covering American history from 1492 to the present. This database allows users to view entire programs such as Biography and shows from the History Channel.

In addition to the vast collection of video, American History in Video features searchable transcripts of programs. Search or browse video by historical era and event, year, people, place, and subject. Users are able to drill down to a precise moment in a program. Videos can be shared via embeddable links and user-created playlists and clips.

17th-18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers is a full-text, fully searchable digital archive of nearly 1,270 newspapers, news-books, pamphlets, ephemera, and other early forms newspapers from the United Kingdom. Collected by the Reverend Charles Burney, this unique collection represents the largest and most comprehensive archive of 17th and 18th century news media available from the British Library. The present digital collection, that helps chart the development of the concept of 'news' and 'newspapers' and the "free press", totals almost 1 million pages. Many of the Burney newspapers are well known, but many pamphlets and broadsides also included have remained largely hidden. The newly digitized Burney collection makes these items more easily accessible.

American Film Scripts Online is a large repository of American movie screenplays from the silent era to the present day. It contains 1,009 scripts by 1,062 writers and includes detailed, fielded information on the scenes, characters and people related to the scripts. The database is comprehensively indexed, and is easily searchable and browseable by fields such as title, author, year, character, actor, or keywords describing the setting or theme of the film. This database is a great place to go for close study of a particular film, or to look for specific examples within a broader research topic.
