Georgia O'Keeffe and the Stieglitz Circle (FA 173a), taught by Professor Nancy Scott, focuses on the art of Georgia O'Keeffe, her stylistic evolution, sources, and collaborations with contemporaries, especially Stieglitz, Strand, Dove, Demuth, Marin, and Hartley. Their collective aesthetic aspirations are set against early 20th-century Modernism and important recent trends from Europe.

Search Strategies for American Modernism in LOUIS and Other Electronic Resources

  • For keyword searches, search both the noun and adjective or use the truncation (or wildcard) sign (? or *) for geographical terms (when possible).

  • Always put an "or" search in parentheses:

    • (american or "united states")

  • Use an "or" or a truncation search for plurals, variant spellings, or for expressing time periods:

    • (modern or 20th) shorten "20th century" to just 20th

  • For geographical searches, consider both broad and narrower regional areas

    • North America
      • United States
        • Southwest
          • New Mexico
            • Taos

  • For the various mediums and styles of art, consider both broad and specific subject terms within the hierarchy of possibilities that could include classifications, movements, styles, and even specific exhibitions:

    • Arts
      • Art
        • Drawing
        • Painting
          • Still-life painting
        • Sculpture
      • Ceramics
      • Photography
        • Photography, Artistic
        • Pictorial photography
    • Art, Modern(Library of Congress inversion for Modern Art)
      • Modernism
        • Armory Show

  • Consider the specific artist not just individually but within various groupings, classifications, movements, styles, and even specific exhibitions:

    • Artists
      • Women artists
      • Painters
        • Georgia O'Keeffe
      • Photographers
        • Photo-Secession
        • Alfred Stieglitz
  • Subject words for Native Americans very considerably in different online resources

    • Library of Congress (LOUIS, WorldCat, Art Abstracts, Academic Search Premier, etc.):Â Indians of North America (and similarly, Indians of Mexico,Indians of Central America, etc.); specific tribes follow the pattern:Â Navajo Indians

    • When in doubt, first perform a keyword search with:Â ("native americans" or indians)

Finding Exhibition Catalogs in LOUIS

  • Almost every bibliographic record for an exhibition catalog includes the subject word Exhibitions:

    O'Keeffe, Georgia, 1887-1986 -- Exhibitions

    Stieglitz, Alfred, 1864-1946 -- Exhibitions

Stieglitz Circle (Group of artists) -- Exhibitions

Modernism (art) -- United States -- Exhibitions

New Mexico in art -- Exhibitions

    Photography, Artistic -- Exhibitions

    Symbolism (Art movement) -- Exhibitions
  • In addition, almost every bibliographic record for an exhibition catalog has a description of the exhibition--and this description includes the searchable word exhibition:
  • Catalog of an exhibition held at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, June 11-Sept. 12, 2004, the Columbus Museum of Art, Oct. 1, 2004-Jan. 16, 2005, and the Delaware Art Museum, Feb. 17-May 15, 2005.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition Georgia O'Keeffe : the poetry of things; April 17-July 18, 1999, The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.; August 7-October 17, 1999, The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe, New Mexico; November 7, 1999-January 30, 2000, Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, Texas; February 19-May 14, 2000, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco, California.
  • To find an exhibition catalog focused on an artist or a particular topic, perform a keyword search that includes the artist's name (last is usually sufficient) or the topic word or words and the search word exhibition? -- this truncation (symbol: ? or *) will search for both the descriptive word exhibition and the subject word exhibitions.

  • Caveat: do not use the word exhibit (or exhibits) in your search--you might get a few results, but exhibit or exhibits is not used consistently in bibliographic records for exhibition catalogs.

  • So, to find all the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibition catalogs at Brandeis, perform this LOUIS keyword search:

  • georgia o'keeffe exhibition?

Citation Guides

    • Citing Sources

    • For all standard footnote and bibliography forms according to four different style manuals, see Duke University's Documentation Guidelines: Citing Sources within Your Paper. Use the Chicago Manual of Style formats. A copy of the Chicago Manual of Style is in Creative Arts Reference: Z 253 .U69 2003. Some examples are given at the Chicago Manual of Style Web site.

    • You will also find some useful citation and other style guidelines in the Submission and Style Guidelines for The Art Bulletin published by the College Art Association.

    • There are numerous ways to cite an online encyclopedia, and specifically, an article in Grove Art Online. Here are the forms I recommend.

      • A signed article with one author for the entire article:

      • Footnote:

Sarah Whitaker Peters, "O'Keeffe, Georgia," Grove Art Online (2004), http://www.groveart.com (accessed 15 February 2006). [Note: unrevised article.]

Franklin Kelly, "Hudson River School" (rev. 27 September 1999), Grove Art Online, http://www.groveart.com (accessed 15 February 2006). [Note: revised article]

    • Bibliography:

Peters, Sarah Whitaker. " O'Keeffe, Georgia ." Grove Art Online (2004), http://www.groveart.com (accessed accessed 15 February 2006). [Note: unrevised article]

Kelly, Franklin. " Hudson River School" (rev. 27 September 1999). Grove Art Online, http://www.groveart.com (accessed accessed 15 February 2006). [Note: revised article]

    • A signed article, person is author of a portion of the article:
    Footnote:

Ann Barrott Wicks, "Literati" (rev. 1 December 2004), sec. V ("Painting"), 4 ("Painters and Institutions"), ii of "China," Grove Art Online, http://www.groveart.com (accessed 15 February 2006). [Note: revised article]

    Bibliography:

  • Citing an Exhibition Catalog

Example:

Shackelford, George T. M. and Claire Fréches-Thory. Gauguin Tahiti. Boston, MA: MFA Publications, 2004. Published in conjunction with the exhibition "Gauguin Tahiti," organized by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux, the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Exhibition held September 30 2003-January 19, 2004 at the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, Paris and at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston on February 29-June 20, 2004. (based on the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed. [2003])

Example for a footnote:

George T. M. Shackelford and Claire Fréches-Thory, Gauguin Tahiti (Boston, MA: MFA Publications, 2004), p. 43 . [Note: this truncated bibliographic data is only possible if you have a full citation in the bibliography at the end of your paper.]
