for Professor Nancy Scott, Fine Arts Department

October 2005

Impressionism: Avant-Garde Rebellion in Context (FA 171a), taught by Professor Nancy Scott, focuses on the major artists from the period 1863-86, from the time of Manet and the Salon des Refusés, through the eight group exhibitions of Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne, Pissarro, Morisot, and Cassatt and company. This course addresses the antithesis of Impressionism, its academic rivals, the backdrop of the sociopolitical context, the Second Empire, and the Third Republic, as well as the roots of the movement's dissolution.

Finding Exhibition Catalogs in LOUIS

  • Almost every bibliographic record for an exhibition catalog includes the subject word Exhibitions:

    Renoir, Auguste, 1841-1919 -- Exhibitions

    Sisley, Alfred, 1839-1899 -- Exhibitions

    Caillebotte, Gustave, 1848-1894 -- Exhibitions

Impressionism (Art) -- France -- Exhibitions

    Still-life painting -- 19th century -- Exhibitions

  • In addition, almost every bibliographic record for an exhibition catalog has a description of the exhibition--and this description includes the searchable word exhibition:

Published in conjunction with the exhibition held Sept. 16, 1994-Jan. 9, 1995 at the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, Paris; Feb. 18-May 28, 1995 at the Art Institute of Chicago, and June 22-Sept. 10, 1995 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Catalog of an exhibition held at the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Lyon, Oct. 10, 2002-Jan. 6, 2003.

  • To find an exhibition catalog focused on an artist or a particular topic, perform a keyword search that includes the artist's name (last is usually sufficient) or the topic word or words and the search word exhibition? -- this truncation (symbol: ? or *) will search for both the descriptive word exhibition and the subject word exhibitions.

  • Caveat: do not use the word exhibit (or exhibits) in your search--you might get a few results, but exhibit or exhibits is not used consistently in bibliographic records for exhibition catalogs.

  • So, to find all the Renoir exhibition catalogs at Brandeis, perform this LOUIS keyword search:

  • renoir exhibition?
  • To find all the exhibition catalogs on Impressionism held by Brandeis, perform this LOUIS keyword search:

  • impressionism exhibition?
  • To find all the exhibition catalogs of Impressionism at Metropolitan Museum of Art held by Brandeis, perform this LOUIS keyword search:

  • impressionism metropolitan exhibition?

Citation Guides

    • Citing Sources

    • For all standard footnote and bibliography forms according to four different style manuals, see Duke University's Documentation Guidelines: Citing Sources within Your Paper. Use the Chicago Manual of Style formats. A copy of the Chicago Manual of Style is in Creative Arts Reference: Z 253 .U69 2003.

    • You will also find many useful citation and other style guidelines in the Submission and Style Guidelines for The Art Bulletin published by the College Art Association.

    • There are numerous ways to cite an online encyclopedia, and specifically, an article in Grove Art Online. Here are the forms I recommend.

      • A signed article with one author for the entire article:

      • Footnote:

Sarah Whitaker Peters, "O'Keeffe, Georgia," Grove Art Online (2004), http://www.groveart.com (accessed 7 September 2004). [Note: unrevised article.]

Franklin Kelly, "Hudson River School" (rev. 27 September 1999), Grove Art Online, http://www.groveart.com (accessed 7 September 2004). [Note: revised article]

    • Bibliography:

Peters, Sarah Whitaker. " O'Keeffe, Georgia ." Grove Art Online (2004), http://www.groveart.com (accessed 7 September 2005). [Note: unrevised article]

Kelly, Franklin. " Hudson River School" (rev. 27 September 1999). Grove Art Online, http://www.groveart.com (accessed 7 September 2005). [Note: revised article]

    • A signed article, person is author of a portion of the article:
    Footnote:

Ann Barrott Wicks, "Literati" (rev. 30 April 2002), sec. V ("Painting"), 4 ("Painters and Institutions"), ii of "China," Grove Art Online, http://www.groveart.com (accessed 7 September 2005). [Note: revised article]

  • Citing an Exhibition Catalog

Example:

Mary Cassatt: Modern Woman. Edited by Judith A. Barter. Chicago: Art Institute of Chicago, in association with Harry N. Abrams, 1998. Published in conjunction with the exhibition "Mary Cassatt: Modern Woman" shown at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery in Washington, DC, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
