Tools for Publishing Stories
Using UNet Space for Web Publishing
You can use your Brandeis UNet account to publish web pages on people.brandeis.edu. Simply place files in the WWW directory within your UNet space to have them published at http://people.brandeis.edu/~unetname/. To replace the default file listing with a custom web page, name the page index.html. For instructions on how to connect to your UNet space click

Blogs & Wikis
You can use blogs or wikis to publish text, images and links with simple web-editing tools. For more information review the library's Collaborative Writing Using Blogs and Wikis guide

- Blogger
Google's site for creating free blogs. Allows you to create a group blog with multiple authors. You can customize colors and fonts and upload images.
- WordPress
A free, easy-to-use blogging tool from the Open Source Project. Allows you to upload multiple file types including image files and pdfs and customize posts. You can create a group blog by adding other WordPress.com users to your blog.
- PBwiki
Allows you to set up a wiki as quickly and easily as making a peanut butter sandwich. Wikis can be public or private. Anyone can view pubic wikis but you still need the password to make changes.
- Wikispaces
A free, easy-to-use wiki service. Wikis are set to "protected" by default and can be viewed by anyone but can only be edited by members.

PowerPoint
You can use this presentation software program to create slides with text and graphics. PowerPoint is one of the simplest computer programs to learn and customize. Below are some full-text books about using PowerPoint from the library's e-book database,

Privacy & Security
Remember that webpages, wikis and blogs are public and can be seen by anyone surfing to their address. Never post information that others might consider private such as street address, phone numbers or account passwords etc.
Copyright
Works published pre-1923 are in the public domain. Unpublished works are under copyright for at least the life of the author plus 70 years. Read more about copyright terms

Dictionaries & Encyclopedias
- Literature Online Fulltext (LION)
Primarily known as an e-book and e-text database, LION also contains a selection of dictionaries, encylopedias and online criticisms. A good source for locating biographical information, a complete list of the author's works, and criticisms.
- Literature Resource Center
Electronic compilation of entries from Dictionary of Literary Biography, Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature, Contemporary Authors and more. Most entries contain biographical and critical essay, a comprehensive list of writings, sidelights about the author's development and a listing of critical sources.
- Oxford English Dictionary
A guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past. The OED traces the usage of words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of international English language sources.
E-Book, E-Text and E-Journal Collections
- Accessible Archives
Contains full-text material from 18th & 19th century American journals, magazines and newspapers. Includes Godey's Ladys Book (1830-1880), one of the first and most successful American women's magazines featuring poems, stories, and articles. Several issues of Godey's Ladys Book are available in print in Archives and Special Collections, Call number: Cage AP2 .G56.
- American Periodicals Series
A selection of magazines, journals and other periodicals that first began publishing between 1740 and 1900, including literary and professional journals, women's magazines, and many other historically-significant periodicals. Contains Scribner's Monthly (1870-1881), The Century Illustrated Magazine (1881-1906), Monthly Magazine and American Review (1799-1800), American Review and Literary Journal (1801-1802), and the Literary Magazine and the American Register (1803-1807).
- Early American Fiction, 1789-1875 (LION)
Early American Fiction offers full-text and digitized copies of more than 875 first editions of American novels and short stories by such authors as Louisa May Alcott, Herman Melville, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Mark Twain, as well as a host of minor writers of the period.
- Early English Books (EEBO)
Early English Books Online (EEBO) contains digital facsimile page images of virtually every work printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America and works in English printed elsewhere from 1473-1700.
- Eighteenth Century Collections Online
Contains digital images of 150,000 books published during the 18th Century. Includes works by many well-known and lesser-known authors published between 1701 and 1800.
- Google Books
A searchable archive of the full texts of books and periodicals scanned from publishers and libraries.
- Project Gutenberg
A searchable collection of over 19,000 eBooks whose copyright has expired in the USA (pre-1923).
Historical Newspapers (Full-text Online)
- Accessible Archives
Contains full-text material from 18th & 19th century American newspapers. Includes The Pennsylvania Gazette (1728-1800), The Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective, and African American Newspapers: The 19th Century.
- America's Historical Newspapers, 1690-1876
Fully text-searchable facsimile images of more than 700 historical American newspapers from 23 states and the District of Columbia printed between 1690 and 1876. Focusing largely on the 18th century.
- 19th Century Newspapers
A collection of digital facsimile images from numerous newspapers encompassing the entire 19th century from a range of urban and rural regions throughout the United States; features full-page layout as well as single articles, and includes advertisements and illustrations.

- ABELL: Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature
Contains over 750,000 records covering monographs, periodical articles, critical editions of literary works, book reviews, collections of essays and doctoral dissertations published anywhere in the world. Includes links to the full text of 61 journals.
- MLA International Bibliography
Indexes journals, books and dissertations covering literature, literary theory & criticism, language, and the historical aspects of printing and publishing.
- 19th Century Masterfile
A vast "Index of Indexes." Contains over 60 subject indexes to periodicals, books and newspapers published prior to 1925. Nineteenth century magazines and periodicals indexed include the Atlantic Monthly (1857-1901), Scribner's, and The Century.
- JSTOR
An online archive of important scholarly journals covering many subjects including literature and history. Contains the complete back runs of many scholarly journals but does not contain articles published in the last 3-5 years.
- Readers' Guide Retrospective
Indexes the most popular magazines and periodicals published in the United States from 1890-1982, including the Atlantic Monthly (1890-1982), Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine (1890-1912), Harper's (1889-1982), Scribner's Magazine (1890-1939), The Century (1890-1930), and the Yellow Book, (1894-1897).
- Victorian Database Online
Indexes books, articles and dissertations on the British Victorian period (1830-1914), published from 1945 to present.
- Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals, 1824-1900 (Call number: Reference Z2005 .H6)
Identifies the authors of articles and stories published in 45 major Victorian periodicals. Includes bibliography for authors and table of contents for periodicals covered. Available in print in the Goldfarb Library.

Archives & Special Collections
- Robert D. Farber University Archives and Special Collections (Brandeis)
Houses many of the library's "jewels," which consist primarily of rare books and manuscript collections. The rare book collection includes incunabula; books published in the 16th-20th centuries on such subjects as English and American literature, philosophy, history, and Judaica; first and critical editions; fine press publications; and a Shakespeare collection. Indexes and provides access to over 700,000 collection records and nearly 30,000 collection finding guides for archival resources. A great resource for learning about the unique collections of thousands of libraries, museums, and archives.

A worldwide catalog containing records for books and other materials held in most academic, research and large public libraries. Useful to identify and locate material not owned by Brandeis.
