Find books

Tips for searching LOUIS catalog:

  • start with a keyword search in Advanced Search
  • use synonyms to find all the ways your topic might be expressed
  • use asterisks (*) to capture all the variations of a word
    > look at the list of subject headings in the record for a book that is on your topic
    > follow the subject links to find more books on that same specific topic
    > you may want to limit to English!

  • example: warfare in Mesoamerica
keyword search: war* or conflict or fight* AND mesoamerica*
leads to subjects like: Indians of Mexico - Warfare, Indians of Central America - Warfare, Aztecs - Wars

  • if you are starting with a specific topic unique to Mesoamerica, such as Olmec culture, just try a general keyword search for Olmec*

    • you can also use Advanced Search and do a "Keyword(s) in Subject" search for:
      • indians of mexico antiquities
      • indians of mexico
      • indians of central america antiquities
      • indians of central america
      • mexico antiquities
      • central america antiquities

If Brandeis doesn't have what you want, try WorldCat

  • search this nationwide database of library catalogs to find books on your subject that Brandeis doesn't own
  • click on "Libraries that own this item" to see which local libraries have it
  • use the free Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service to have the book sent to you
  • if you are in a hurry, get a BLC card and borrow the book yourself from one of 18 other academic libraries in the area
