Brandeis University LTS is dedicated to providing access and services to all members of the Brandeis Community. If you have questions or suggestions about any of our services to people with disabilities, please contact Jason Bernard at 781-736-4740 or email jbernard@brandeis.edu.
The Goldfarb Main Library (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) and the Gerstenzang Science Library (Sciences) are wheelchair accessible from the front entrances of both libraries.
The Goldfarb Library and lobby entrance to the Gerstenzang building have automatic doors.
Inside Gerstenzang, the main door to the Science Library is open during operating hours. The side entrance to the Gerstenzang building, which also has an automatic door, is closer to the parking spaces marked for handicapped use.

There are parking spaces marked for handicapped use next to Pearlman and in the service lot between Usdan and Brown for getting to the Main Library. There are parking spaces marked for handicapped use in the K-lot near the side entrance of the Gerstenzang building.

All floors of the Main and Science Libraries are accessible. Ask for the key to the Science Library's front elevator at the Science Circulation Desk.
Rest rooms on level 1 (the main floor) of the Main Library are wheelchair accessible. Restrooms in the Gerstenzang lobby just outside the entrance to the Science Library are wheelchair accessible. Water fountains in the Main and Science Libraries are wheelchair accessible.
Public and campus telephones in the Main Library and Science Library are wheelchair accessible. TTY/TTD Machines are available behind the InfoPoint service desk in the Main Library, and next to the Information Desk at the Science Library.
Many of the Main Library stacks are not wheelchair accessible. [The aisles to Science Library stacks may accommodate wheelchairs.] Reference librarians are available at the Research Consultation Office to demonstrate how to "browse the stacks" using the online catalog.
LTS staff are available to retrieve books from the stacks when needed. At certain times there may be a short wait for book retrieval, based on staff availability.
Some lockers and carrels at the Main Library are reserved for students with disabilities. Please ask at the Main Library Loans desk. Book carts are also available for library patron use at both libraries.
Proxy service is available to patrons with disabilities. This service allows the patron to designate another person as their "proxy" who could then check out books on their behalf. Please contact the Main Library Loans desk for more information.
The Main Library has a study carrel with an adjustable table top. It is located in the reference area near the windows, on the right hand side as you enter Main Library. One computer table in each of the Electronic Research Centers (Main and Science Libraries) is higher to accommodate wheelchairs. The Adaptive Technology Room has adjustable table and chairs (see Adaptive Technology below for more information).
Photocopy machines are located throughout the Libraries. Photocopying service for library patrons with disabilities is available at the Main Library InfoPoint desk. Photocopy machines on level 1 and 4 of the Main Library and on both levels of the Science Libraries are equipped with the ability to make enlargements.
There is incandescent lighting at eight study spaces in the Main Library, in Farber (Level 1) and in Goldfarb (Level 3). There are also portable desk lamps that can be borrowed from the Loans desk in the Main Library.
Levels 2 and 3 of the Main Library are designated "quiet areas". No talking is allowed in this area so that students can study. The entire Science Library is designated as a quiet area, except near the Circulation Desk and Reference area.
Reference librarians are available at the Main Library at the InfoPoint desk, and at the Science Library at the Information desk and on call. Reference librarians can assist with any questions you have about using the library or conducting library research.
Books on tape, in large print, or in Braille are available through the library. The library uses the services of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, the Perkins School Library, and other organizations to borrow books in different formats.
Not all books that are required for classes at Brandeis are available in these formats. Often orders take several weeks to process. Please contact faculty members prior to the beginning of a semester to get a copy of the reading list.
Send the list of books you need to Jason Bernard at the Main Library (jbernard@brandeis.edu, or campus mail: MS 045).
Adaptive technology is available to Brandeis students, faculty, and staff with disabilities. Large screen computers with screen-enlarging software are available on the first floor of both libraries. A print enlarger is also available in the Information Commons of the Main Library.
The Adaptive Tehnology Room in the Farber building of the Main Library offers:
Equipment that converts print to synthesized speech
Voice-activated and dictation software
Screen-enlarging software
A print enlarger
Concept-mapping software
A 4-track tape player
Tables and chairs in the Adaptive Technology Room are adjustable. To access the room and equipment, contact Jason Bernard at 781-736-4740. If Jason is unavailable, please contact the FRC at 781-736-LTTE.
