Microforms in the Libraries

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Where are microforms housed in the libraries?
A:  Microfilm newspapers from call number PN4899.B65 B67 to PN5129.L63 T5 are located in the Main Library on Goldfarb Level 1 along the windows facing the Usdan Student Center.   The Judaica Reference room has its own area for microforms as does the Creative Arts section.  All other microforms are housed in closed stacks and must be retrieved by an LTS staff member at the InfoPoint desk in the Main Library or the Circulation desk in the Science Library.

Q:  How can I request to use items in closed stacks?
A:  You can request an item in closed stacks in person by filling out a paper request slip available at the Main Library InfoPoint desk or the Science Library Circulation desk.  You may also email: circulation@brandeis.edu.   A web form directly in the LOUIS online catalog is in development and will be available soon.

Q:  Where can I pick up materials in closed stacks that I've requested?
A:  Material available for pickup will be located on the hold shelf at the Main Library Loans and Returns desk or on the hold shelf at the Science Library Circulation desk.

Q:  How long will it take for items in closed stacks to be retrieved?
A:  It could take up to 24 hours for the microforms you've requested to be retrieved.  However, LTS staff will make every effort to expedite this process.

Q:  How will I know when to pick up items I've requested?
A:  LTS staff will email you when your items are ready for pickup.  If you are waiting in person for the items then we ask that you wait in the computing cluster close to our service desk so that we can easily locate you when your items are ready.

Q:  I am working on an intensive project and I need continuous access to multiple microforms.  What can I do?
A:  In some cases LTS staff will grant you "Scholar's Access" to our closed stacks annexes.  These decisions are made on a case by case basis.  Scholar's Access means that LTS staff will open the storage annex for you, show you where to locate your microforms, and allow you to retrieve your items as needed for the day.  We only ask that you let us know when you are leaving the building so that the room may be secured.  Unfortunately, we cannot grant Scholar's Access to the annex housing microforms PR1120 E18 to Z7009.L5 S8.

Q:  Why have some microfilm machines and current periodicals been moved to the first floor of the Main Library?
A:  We have moved equipment and resources to the first floor so they will be in a place where they are more accessible and LTS staff are best able to help.
