About Brandeis Scholar

Brandeis Scholar http://scholar.brandeis.edu

Introduction

Brandeis Scholar is a new electronic research portal being offered to the Brandeis community by Library and Technology Services. Our goal is to make it easier for you to find good information resources on a topic; these resources may include articles, books, images, databases and more.

Brandeis Scholar is powered by a third-party federated search system called MetaLib, which is used by several major research libraries across the world. Federated searching allows you to search several research databases, including the LOUIS catalog, at one time and get back a combined list of results.

Functionality

There are 3 major areas of functionality offered by Brandeis Scholar. These are:

1. Federated searching within multiple databases at one time
2. Locating a full list of databases and electronic journals available at Brandeis
3. Saving citations, database sets and searches in your own personalized area

1. Federated Searching Within Selected Databases

QuickSearch (Recommended)
Quick Search is an easy way to do an initial search for articles and books in broad topic areas. You can search pre-selected databases in broad subject areas called Quick Sets. Use the default set for General Articles and Books, or pick one of the subject sets. Save citations to your My Citations folders in My Research. See your search history and save your searches.

CustomSearch (Advanced)
Find and select multiple databases and search them simultaneously. Browse a list of new databases.

2. Locating A Full List Of Databases And Electronic Journals

Find Database
Find and connect to indexes and abstracts, encyclopedias, dictionaries, e-book or e-journal collections, and many other electronic resources and databases. Locate databases by title, subject and other options. Add frequently used databases to your "My Databases" list in My Research.

Find E-Journal
Find and connect to individual electronic journals. Search or browse by journal title, subject or ISSN.

3. My Research - Personalizing Your Research

My Citations - Save results of your searches, such as links to articles, books, and other items. Send them to your e-mail or save them to EndNote.
My Databases - Save your own sets of databases for ease of access or federated searching.
Saved Searches - View past saved searches and rerun them.

Get It @ Brandeis
Whenever you see a Get It button in search results, click on it to locate the item in full text online or in print at Brandeis.

If there is no full text available on the Get It menu, click on the title of the article in Brandeis Scholar to bring up the full description. If you see an External Link in the description, click on it and you may be able to access the full text or image.

Things to Remember
Brandeis Scholar lets you use simple keyword searching to find some good information on a topic and shows you what databases have good coverage of your subject area. To do a thorough search on your topic, follow the link to the actual databases (such as Academic Search Premier) and continue your search for information. Remember that Brandeis Scholar only returns the first 30 citations from each database, unless you request more.

Not all databases can be searched via federated searching. This is controlled by the database vendor and not by LTS. Use Find Database by Subject to make sure you don't miss major databases on your topic.

Refer to our Privacy Statement for further information about using personalization in Brandeis Scholar.
