Biography

Stephen S. Wise was born in Budapest, Hungary, on March 17, 1874. In 1875 the family moved to America after his father, Aaron Wise, became rabbi of Congregation Rodeph Sholem in Manhattan.

Wise studied at the College of the City of New York but finished at Columbia University, graduating with honors in 1892. He followed his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and was ordained as a rabbi under Chief Rabbi Jellinek in Vienna. Jellinek influenced him to further develop an interest in public affairs and the importance of the world-wide Jewish community. Wise later studied with Adolf Neubauer at Oxford.

Inspired by the example of Theodor Herzl, Wise turned to Reform Judaism and Zionism in the 1890s. In 1900 he married Louise Waterman and moved to Oregon to be rabbi at a temple in Portland. While in Portland, Wise insisted that the pulpit be free from restrictions, in opposition to the increasing practice among congregations of requiring the rabbi to clear sermon topics with the board of trustees. He often preached on topics related to social issues, such as gambling and child labor. He also became allies with Christian ministers to fight for social causes, such as for a child labor law in Oregon.

Five years later, Wise was offered the position of rabbi at Emanu-El in New York but refused it after a disagreement over the role of the rabbi. Wise felt rabbis should exhort the congregation, expose injustices and encourage action. This philosophy made him a dynamic and controversial figure for his entire career and inspired him to found the Free Synagogue upon his return to New York in 1906. Wise also lectured frequently outside the synagogue on Jewish rights, Zionism, and political justice.

In 1915-16, Wise, along with Louis Brandeis, founded the American Jewish Congress to support Jewish rights around the world. In 1922 he founded the Jewish Institute of Religion, a post-baccalaureate program that included students from all branches of Judaism. During the 1930s, Wise devoted his time to warning the country about the rise of fascism in Europe and the plight of the Jews, with limited success. After World War II, Wise involved himself in Zionist issues and the founding of the free state of Israel.

In 1949, Stephen Wise died. He had known and worked with many of the most influential people of the era: Louis Brandeis, Chaim Weizmann, Abba Hillel Silver, John Haynes Holmes. He was one of the greatest American religious leaders of his time, leaving a permanent impact on American Reform Judaism.
