Biography
Outside his interest in the Sacco-Vanzetti case, little is known of
the details of the life of
Thomas F. O'Connor. Born in
1887, he lived and worked as a journalist, author and
businessman in
Massachusetts and
New York.
While working as a reporter attached to the Massachusetts State House
(1920 - 1930), O'Connor first became involved in the case of Sacco and
Vanzetti, participating in the campaigns for their innocence waged by the
Citizens National Committee for Sacco and Vanzetti
based in Boston and the
National League for Sacco and Vanzetti which
operated out of New York. O'Connor continued his efforts to keep the memory of
the pair alive for the rest of his life. To this end, he published several
articles on the case and assisted with the 1959 effort lead by
Arthur Schlesinger, Sr., and
Michael Musmanno to obtain an official pardon for
the accused from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. O'Connor also served as the
secretary for the Vindication Committee of Sacco and Vanzetti based in
Newton, MA.
In addition to his efforts regarding the history of the Sacco-Vanzetti
case, O'Connor wrote on a number of subjects. With
Thomas H. Spence and
Virgil Peterson, O'Connor authored
Church Archives and History (1946) and edited
The Bleachery District of Waltham, Past and Present: a
Souvenir (1957). He also assisted with the publication of other
authors' work, including
Eugene Lyons and
Upton Sinclair, most notably with the latter's
novel,
Boston.
Thomas O'Connor died in the late 1960s.

Scope and Content
The Tom O'Connor Collection is part of the Brandeis University Special
Collections' extensive set of material related to the trial and legacy of
Nicola Sacco and
Bartolomeo Vanzetti. The collection consists
chiefly of the newsclippings and correspondence O'Connor collected during his
lifetime interest in the case.
O'Connor's observation of the initial trial events and his continued
advocacy for the pair's innocence lend this collection a long-term perspective
on American attitudes toward the case. This material provides particular
insights into the resurgence of interest in Sacco and Vanzetti during the early
1960s. The O'Connor files, taken together with the other Sacco-Vanzetti
collections in the Brandeis University Libraries, comprise a very significant
archival resource for research.

Series Description
Series 1
Correspondence,
1920-1965
153 folders
This correspondence series is divided into two subseries.
Subseries 1a. Thomas O'Connor Correspondence,
1960-1965.
136 folders
Alphabetical
The first contains the personal letters and enclosed materials
sent and received by Tom O'Connor. These items are generally from the years
1960 - 1965, during which O'Connor took part in and commented extensively on
the renewed interest in the question of Sacco and Vanzetti's innocence. This
material is organized into folders by correspondent, and filed alphabetically.
Subseries 1b. Citizens National Committee for
Sacco-Vanzetti/Sacco-Vanzetti National League,
1920-1928.
17 folders
Alphabetical
Since O'Connor retained some of the original correspondence and
related documents of both the Citizens National Committee for Sacco-Vanzetti
and the Sacco-Vanzetti National League, this subseries preserves a perspective
on the inner workings and public activities of those organizations.
Series 2
Documents Related to the Sacco-Vanzetti Case
1921-1930
31 folders
Alphabetical
This small series contains a variety of items bearing on the
history of Sacco and Vanzetti, including newsclippings, investigation
materials, memorial documents, and copies of the 1920 Pinkerton report
describing the details of the alleged crime. These materials have been
organized alphabetically by subject.
Series 3
Writings of Thomas O'Connor
1960s
25 folders
This series contains various writings by Tom O'Connor and is
divided into 2 subseries.
Subseries 3a. Writings of Thomas O'Connor - General
1926-65.
14 folders
Alphabetical
This series holds both published and manuscript copies of many
of O'Connor writings on the Sacco-Vanzetti case and other topics. The majority
of these materials date from the early 1960s, during a period of renewed
interest in the outcome of the trial. They are organized alphabetically by
title.
Subseries 3b. Writings of Thomas O'Connor - Francis
Russell,
Tragedy in Dedham 1960s.
11 folders
Chronological
As one of the most outspoken critics of Francis Russell's book
Tragedy in Dedham, O'Connor kept detailed notes on
his readings of Russell's work. This series holds typescript notes and
correspondence that provide O'Connor's itemized criticisms of Russell's
convictions about Sacco and Vanzetti.
Series 4
Writings by others
1920-1965
54 folders
Alphabetical
Tom O'Connor's collection of articles, speeches and drafts on the
Sacco-Vanzetti case include material dating both from the 1920s and the 1960s.
Arguments both for the guilt and innocence of the accused are represented here.
This series also preserves several student papers on the topic. Organized
alphabetically by author, these documents include writings by Fred Cook,
Michael Musmanno, Francis Russell, Arthur Schlesinger, and Barbara Tuchman
among others.
Series 5
Newsclippings
1959-1960
12 boxes
Chronological, then Alphabetical
The largest series in this collection, the O'Connor newsclippings
files provide a unique and very rich documentation of the rediscovery of the
Sacco-Vanzetti case in America and a new focus on the details and the evidence
used to convict the two. Covering the years 1959 and 1960, the clippings are
organized by alphabetically by state and city.
Series 6
Images
1912-1962
6 folders
As the smallest in the collection, the Images series contains a
few black and white photographs of O'Connor and other individuals associated
with the case, a drawing of O'Connor and Nell Maslin, slides containing both
text and photographs, and a published volume of cartoons from the Daily Worker
about the case.
Series 7

1921-1965
20 folders
Alphabetical
This small series contains a variety of materials documenting
O'Connor's interests in other legal matters, civil liberties, and private
organizations.
