Biography
Leo Frank was a Jewish factory superintendent in
Atlanta, Georgia. In April 1913, 12-year-old
factory employee
Mary Phagan was found in the factory (
National Pencil Factory) furnace room, strangled
to death. A janitor,
Jim Conley, a suspect in the killing, accused
Leo Frank of the murder. Suspect witnesses swore
(falsely, it was later proved) that
Leo Frank was a sexual deviant, hence why Mary
Phagan's body was unmolested.
Leo Frank was found guilty on circumstantial
evidence, and the mob atmosphere surrounding the trial erupted against "the
Jew."
Leo Frank was sentenced to hang. The governor of Georgia,
John M. Slaton, commuted the sentence to life
imprisonment. This angered many people and a mob broke into prison, kidnapped
Leo Frank, and lynched him, the only Jew ever
lynched in America for over seventy years. Later, in 1986, the State of Georgia
officially pardoned
Leo Frank.

Scope and Content
This collection chiefly consists of correspondence from
Leo Frank and his wife,
Lucille Frank, to others. It also includes letters
written between Leo and Lucille Frank. Moreover, there is correspondence to and
from Governor Slaton, Frank's lawyer
Luther Z. Rosser and others. There are
miscellaneous articles, pamphlets and legal documents.
While the collection contains no startling evidence or facts about
the murder and trial, it captures the emotions of the principal characters
involved in this miscarriage of justice and sets the atmosphere of the times.
It provides a moving portrait of an important and disgraceful incident in
American history.

Series I.
Lucille Frank Correspondence
This series consists of letters written to and from
Lucille Frank. Many are from strangers
indignant over the unfairness of her husband's trial.
Lucille Frank wrote numerous thank-you
letters, and in some letters wrote of her marriage and her husband with great
feeling providing valuable information and insight. .
Series II.
Leo Frank Correspondence,
This correspondence was written to and from
Leo Frank. It includes letters that
Leo Frank wrote to his then-future wife,
Lucille, and letters written to her while he was in prison. Also, it includes
many thank-you letters to his supporters.
Series III.
Luther Z. Rosser Correspondence
This series consists of correspondence to and from Frank's lawyer,
Luther Z. Rosser. It contains valuable
information about the trial and about the mis-information the public believed
about
Leo Frank and the murder.
Series IV.
Gov. John M. Slaton Correspondence
The bulk of this series are letters written to Gov. Slaton asking
him to commute Leo Frank's sentence of the death penalty. This series
illustrates how many people felt
Leo Frank had been tried unfairly.
Series V.
Miscellaneous Correspondence
Includes correspondence about the Frank trial to and from various
people involved.
Series VI.
Elmer R. Murphey Correspondence
This small series deals with Elmer Murphey's activities to secure
a pardon for Leo Frank.
Series VII.
Books, Articles and News Clippings
Includes articles, pamphlets and other writings about Leo Frank
and his trial.
