Biography
Novelist, playwright, and memorist
Joseph Heller was the author of the celebrated
post-World War II novel
Catch-22 (1961). His writings include:
We Bombed in New Haven (1967),
Clevinger's Trial (1973),
Something Happened (1974),
God Knows (1984), among others; as well as screenplays for
Sex and the Single Girl (1964),
Casino Royale (1967),
Dirty Dingus Magee (1970), and
Of Men and Women (1972).
Heller was born on May 1, 1923, in
Brooklyn, New York, to first-generation
Russian-Jewish immigrants. After graduating from high school in 1941, he became
a blacksmith's helper at the Norfolk Navy Yard in
Virginia, and a year later he enlisted in the Army
Air Corps. Upon his graduation in 1944, he was sent to Corsica, where he flew
sixty B-25 bombing missions over
France and
Italy before being discharged in 1945. His
services in World War II earned him an Air Medal and a Presidential Unit
Citation. And his experiences in battle would provide the background for his
novel Catch-22.
On his return to the
United States, Heller married
Shirley Held and started his college education. He
received a B.A. in English from
New York University in 1948, and a M.A. from
Columbia University in 1949. He also attended
Oxford University as a Fulbright Scholar, after
which he became an English instructor at
Pennsylvania State University. Two years later,
Heller started his career in publishing as an advertisement copywriter, holding
various positions in several magazines, including
Time,
Look, and
McCall's. While working in the publishing industry, he
also wrote short stories and scripts for film and television. After its initial
success,
Catch-22 was turned into a motion picture in 1970. The
film was directed by
Mike Nichols and starred
Alan Arkin as Capitain Yossarian. The film was a box
office failure; however, it helped to boost the sales of the paperback edition
of
Catch-22. The success of
Catch-22 prompted Heller to quit his job at
McCall's magazine and to concentrate exclusively on his
writing. In 1981 he contracted Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a neurological disorder
that left him nearly paralyzed. However, he was able to continue his writings
up to the end of his life. Heller died in East Hampton, New York, on December
12, 1999.

Scope and Content
The materials in this collection were created between 1945 and 1969.
They include complete sets of manuscripts of several novels, plays,
screenplays, correspondence, published editions, and reviews. Of chief
importance is the autograph manuscript of
Catch-22, which shows several stages of revisions, from the
early stages to the final versions, and the important editorial relationship
Heller had with his editor,
Robert Gottlieb. The collection also includes the
manuscripts for the TV series
McHale's Navy, and for the play
We Bombed in New Haven. In addition, this collection
includes signed first editions and translations of
Catch-22 into several languages. The files are organized
by title with subseries of manuscripts, correspondence, background material,
and reviews. Series III,
We Bombed in New Haven, is organized chronologically.

Series Description
Series I.
Catch-22
1945-1967
This series is divided into four subseries and consists of different
materials related to
Catch-22 at several stages. Subseries i contains
autograph and typed manuscripts, corrected galleys from the publisher Simon
& Schuster, and written material that never appeared in the final
publication. This subseries also includes an annotated copy of
Catch-22 with extensive handwritten notes in the
margins, intended to clarify and explain sections of the novel for a motion
picture version. Subseries ii contains letters expressing the reception of
Catch-22 from the general public, as well as
correspondence with producers and writers, such as
Tony Curtis and
John Steinbeck. In addition, there is
correspondence relating to foreign editions of
Catch-22 from several countries. Subseries iii
contains charts used to outline characters and events in the novel
chronologically; annotated photographs from a United States Air Corps Squadron
Book that show people and events that inspired some characters in the novel;
and maps of Corsica that were drawn from memory for Columbia Pictures. This
subseries also contains chronological descriptions and analysis of characters
and events intended to assist in the preparation of the movie version.
Subseries iv contains newsclippings and reviews from different countries, as
well as critical essays and interviews with Joseph Heller.
Series II.
McHale's Navy
1962-1969
This series is divided into 2 subseries. Subseries i contains
manuscripts for
McHale's Navy, a TV series, showing several stages of
revision. Subseries ii contains correspondence relating to the TV production,
including the legal battle over payment to Heller.
Series III.
We Bombed in New Haven
1966-1969
This series is organized chronologically, from the conception of
the play, originally intended for television, to the productions at Yale
University and Broadway, to the printed version. It contains several highly
annotated versions of the scripts that illustrate the different revisions of
the work, and correspondence from producers suggesting even further revisions.
The same process of revisions continued through the publication of the play,
which appear with original materials in different editions. This series also
includes reviews from both the Yale and Broadway productions, as well as from
the European productions.
Series IV.
Love Dad
1966-1969
This series contains the manuscripts of "Love Dad," a short story
developed from an edited-out chapter of
Catch-22 that was accepted for publication in
Playboy Magazine in December, 1969.
Series V.
Short Stories, Reviews, and Other Writings
1945-1967
This series contains published and unpublished works written from
1945 through 1967. While most of these writings are short stories, there are
also articles, reviews, and plays. Some of these works were written while
Heller was an undergraduate at New York University.
