Biography

Historian and journalist Francis Russell wrote on a wide range of topics, from art to popular and juvenile history. One of his better known works is the controversial Tragedy in Dedham, concerning the murder trial of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti during the 1920s.

Russell attended Bowdoin College from 1928-1932, spending a portion of 1931-1932 enrolled at the University of Breslau in Germany. He also received an MA degree from Harvard University in 1937. Russell married Sharon Soong in 1966; the pair had one daughter, Sara.

During the Second World War, he served as an intelligence officer with the Canadian Army and was discharged in 1946.

In addition to his book on Sacco and Vanzetti and his later treatment of the subject, Sacco and Vanzetti: the Case Resolved (1986), Russell's other works include: Three Studies in Twentieth-Century Obscurity: Joyce, Kafka and Gertrude Stein (1953), The World of Durer (1967), and The Shadow of Blooming Grove: Warren G. Harding in His Times (1968). Russell received two Guggenheim fellowships during his lifetime, and was awarded the Edgar Allen Poe award by the Mystery Writers of America for Tragedy in Dedham.

Scope and Content

The Francis Russell Collection composes one portion of the Brandeis University Special Collections' extensive holdings related to the murder trial of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, thus making the university one of the most important sources for material in North America. The importance of this collection lies in the sometimes controversial interpretation of events by Russell as articulated in his book about the trial, Tragedy in Dedham, and in the volume of material the author collected in his lifetime related to the case.

While little of the material in the collection attest to Russell's own life history, these documents do provide detailed information about two organizations active during and after the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti: the Boston-based Citizens National Committee for Sacco and Vanzetti, and the New York-based Sacco and Vanzetti National League. Additionally, this collection holds drafts of Russell's writings, correspondence he accumulating while researching the case, and miscellaneous documents, photographs and videotapes about the trial.

Series Description

Series 1
Francis Russell Correspondence 1958-1962
48 folders
Alphabetical
The majority of this correspondence is from the years 1958 - 1962 and deals largely with Russell's exploration of the Sacco and Vanzetti case for his book, Tragedy in Dedham. Arranged alphabetically by the author of the letter, this series documents Russell's research into the facts of the case. Letters from many of the principal figures involved in the history of the trial are preserved here, including John Dos Passos, Max Eastman, Gardner Jackson, and Tom O'Connor. Of special interest is a long letter from O'Connor to William F. Buckley, Jr., in which O'Connor strongly refutes Buckley's insistence of Sacco and Vanzetti's guilt.
This series provides little information about Russell himself.
Series 2
Sacco and Vanzetti Case Correspondence 1921-1930
20 folders
Alphabetical
This small series contains correspondence among individuals associated with the trial, including a copy of Nicola Sacco's letter to his son Dante written a few days before his execution. These materials are organized alphabetically by author's last name.
Series 3
Citizens National Committee for Sacco and Vanzetti 1925-1927
203 folders
Chronological
The largest series in the Russell collection, this material documents the activities of the eleventh-hour organization formed to appeal the execution verdict during the month of August, 1927. With its headquarters in Parlor D on the 2nd floor of the Bellevue Hotel in Boston, MA, the Citizens National Committee issued round-the-clock statements and correspondence seeking the revocation of Sacco and Vanzetti's death sentences. This body was under the leadership of Isaac Don Levine and Robert Morss Lovett and featured a large number of prominent New England intellectuals and activists of the time, including Jane Addams, John Dewey, Paul Kellogg, Katherine Anne Porter, and Ida Tarbell.
Organized chronologically, this series provides extensive insight into the flurry of activity this group engaged in during a very brief period of approximately two weeks. Divided roughly between telegrams, both originals and copies, and press statements, the Committee materials shed light on the dynamic of both the American and international movements in opposition to the death penalty for the accused.
Series 4
Sacco-Vanzetti National League (New York) 1927-1931
83 folders
Chronological
This series documents a portion of the activities of the New York-based Sacco-Vanzetti Defense League, which acted following the pairs' execution in August, 1927, to maintain focus on the perceived miscarriage of justice.
Consisting primarily of correspondence, these materials are filed chronologically and the majority run between 1927 and 1930. Prominent correspondents include: Robert M. Lovett, Forrest Bailey, Gardner Jackson, and Felix Frankfurter. This series also contains assorted statements made by the League, as well as committee meetings and some financial documents.
Series 5
Photographs ca. 1927
6 folders
The Russell Collection contains a small number of black and white photographs documenting both the trial and the evidence used therein.
Series 6
Newsclippings undated
2 folders
Francis Russell kept a small number of newsclippings on the legacy of the Sacco and Vanzetti case, particularly during the writing of his book on the topic. These clippings center around 1960 and emphasize the search for new evidence in the case and the ongoing reinterpretation of events.
In addition, this series holds copies of political cartoons published during the years of the trial, the majority of which are from the Boston Post.
Series 7
Publications, Writings and Evidence about the Sacco-Vanzetti Case 1921-1965
36 folders
Alphabetical
This series collects the wide variety of miscellaneous material in the Russell collection. Arranged alphabetically, these documents include several publications and editorials on the Sacco and Vanzetti case. Of particular interest is a folder of material related to the firearms evidence used to convict the pair, and a file of international responses to the verdict.
Series 8
Video 1927
1 videotape
Tape of the funeral procession of Sacco and Vanzetti.
Series 9
Tragedy in Dedham typescript 1962
21 folders
This series holds the centerpiece of the Russell collection: his typescript draft of the 1962 book, Tragedy in Dedham. Organized by chapter, these 628 pages contain extensive content, stylistic and typographical annotation and provide an informative backdrop to the published version.
