The 1952 revolution in Egypt eliminated the old royal dynasty and brought to the head of affairs the ambitious young Lieutenant Colonel, Gamal Nasser, who was to dominate the life of his country and the Middle East for nearly two decades. He effected fundamental economic and social reforms in the structure of Egypt, climaxed by the completion of the Aswan Dam. He was continually diverted, however, by his dream of imperial expansion and by the unending war with Israel, where he was twice humiliatingly defeated. He brought the Soviet Union into the Mediterranean and the Middle East, and this established a bondage that was to be almost impossible to loosen.
