To the astonishment of the world and to Churchill's chagrin his Tory party was overwhelmingly defeated in the election of 1945 and Labor took over the task of reconstructing Britain in the new post-war world. Clement Attlee became Prime Minister and he brought in with him a gifted group of colleagues -- Cripps, Bevin, Morrison, Bevan - - who had radical views of what was necessary as the country emerged from the welter of war. Within a few years, there was an astonishing mass of legislation that was reminiscent of the Roosevelt New Deal and that transformed the whole structure of British imperial relationships.
