Description
The peace and security of the West depended, after World War I, on the democratic tripod, the U.S., France and Britain. But the Tripod proved all top wobbly and, after a few years, there was no tripod at all. The U.S. turned isolationist, and Britain was too enfeebled to carry any major responsibility. But the weakest part turned out to be France. It suffered a fearful hemorrhage of manpower and resources in World War I and all its hopes for reparations from defeated Germany to help restore her strength proved an illusion. The 20 years after Versailles therefore were a nightmare of ever weaker coalition governments until a resurgent Germany under Hitler struck for the third time in a lifetime and almost permanently destroyed the land and its people.
