Description
At the end of the 19th century Europe was the center of the world and Britain was the center of Europe. This world, which believed implicitly in progress and had great faith in the capacity and motivations of man, was to be drastically altered as World War I destroyed not only the four empires of Germany, Austria, Russia and Turkey, but also the sanctions and values that had been considered immutable. The chief casualty was man's belief in what he was doing - and thereafter whatever happened were not events but consequences, as the past became the womb of the future.
