Biography
Rabbi Albert Axelrad served as the Brandeis Rabbi and Hillel
Director for 34 years, from 1965 to 1999. Born on October 22,
1938, Rabbi Axelrad attended the Yeshiva of Flatbush High School in
Brooklyn, New York, and went on to receive his undergraduate degree
in sociology from Columbia University. He received his Master's
Degree in Hebrew Literature from Hebrew Union College, and in 1965
he was ordained as a rabbi at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute
of Religion (HUC-JIR). Rabbi Axelrad's activities at Brandeis
included the rabbinical duties of counseling and spiritual
guidance, as well as running and directing the Brandeis B'nai
B'rith Hillel group. His other interests included topics in
Israeli-Palestinian relations, Soviet, East European, Ethiopian,
Syrian, and Cuban Jewry issues, and issues of amnesty. Rabbi
Axelrad also took an active role in social activism and civil
issues. He is the author of numerous articles, prayers, and
essays. After retiring from Brandeis in 1999, Rabbi Axelrad took a
rabbinical position with Emerson College in Boston.

Scope and Content
The materials in this collection were created from 1966 through
2000. The files include personal, professional, and spiritual
advice correspondence, speeches and prayers written by Rabbi
Axelrad, and biographical information about him. Also included are
calendars, daybooks, photographs, reports, pamphlets, memorabilia,
and posters. The collection documents both his work at Brandeis and
his professional activities outside of the university. Some of the
documents in this collection are written in Hebrew, German, and
French.
