History--Biography
The Vice President of Communications is the chief administrator of the
Office of Communications, and reports directly to the university
President. The Office of Communications is responsible for all official
communications between the university and the community it serves. It
represents and promotes the university and its faculty, students,
programs, and policies to a variety of external constituents: the media,
the federal government, local governments, and neighboring communities.
Communications also assists in communicating university news and
information to internal constituents including faculty, student media,
staff, and alumni. The Office of Communications helps members of the
Brandeis community in publicizing campus events, scholarly achievements,
and other news of general interest. Such publicity may be targeted to
local, regional, or national media outlets through press releases and the
monthly calendar. Offices under the aegis of Public Affairs include Media
Relations, Publications, Photography, and Web Services.

Contents
This collection spans the years 1948-2002 (bulk, 1986-1999) and focuses on the promotion of Brandeis programs, projects, and special events including: the 50th anniversary celebration, the Alumni Achievement Award, the Brandeis Forum, campus construction projects, commencement, the Energy Conservation Project, Founders' Day, presidential inaugurations, and the creation of the Sakharov Archives. In addition to news clippings, publicity materials, and speeches, the collection contains meeting minutes, admissions statistics, press releases, correspondence, photographs, administrative reports, and biographical information on Brandeis presidents. Topics of particular interest include Evelyn Handler's resignation as University President, E. L. Doctorow's controversial commencement address, community protest against the creation of a cogeneration plant on campus, the status of students of color at Brandeis, and divestment from South Africa.

to divestment from South Africa, multicultural diversity at Brandeis,

materials cover a range of topics including: Stuart Altman's role as
Interim President after Evelyn Handler's resignation; the tragic deaths
of Marver and Sheva Bernstein; E. L. Doctorow's controversial
commencement address in which he criticized former President Ronald
Reagan and American conservatism; Judy Chicago's exhibit at the Rose Art
Museum; the Dalai Lama's visit to Brandeis; President Jehuda Reinharz's
inauguration; Alumni Achievement Award winners; a non-fatal student
shooting at Brandeis; the creation of the Sakharov Archives; the
university's 50th anniversary celebration; and an extensive survey on
undergraduate recruitment at Brandeis. Also included are many
photographs of President Thier.
