History--Biography
The Board of Fellows consists of hundreds of nationally or professionally
prominent people who lend their expertise and advice to Brandeis, serve
on many Brandeis advisory boards, act as goodwill ambassadors, recruit
for the University, fund raise, and provide gifts to the University.
Fellows are elected by the Board of Trustees to serve three-year terms
which may be renewed. The Fellows was founded in 1951 to act as
Brandeis' "foster alumni." Its first member was Dr. Selman
Waksman and its first chairman was Frank Weil. Other significant members
have included Joan Crawford, Oscar Handlin, and Senators Abraham Ribicoff
and Howard Metzenbaum. The Fellows hold a number of events, meetings, and
programs, including their annual meeting held at Brandeis during
commencement weekend.
