History--Biography
The Brandeis University National Women's Committee (BUNWC) is an
autonomous non-profit membership organization dedicated to raising funds
for the University libraries; it consists of over 55,000 members in 115
chapters throughout the United States. In addition to raising money for
books, the committee supports library endowment funds, such as the Library
Trust Fund. The BUNWC also sponsors study groups and other educational
and leadership programs, such as the University-on-Wheels program in which
Brandeis faculty members give lectures at local chapters.
The governing structure of the BUNWC consists of a National President who
presides over an Executive Committee and a National Board. An Executive
Director and a professional staff support this governing structure. The
BUNWC was founded in 1948 to help develop the library collection, since at
that time the library consisted of only a few thousand volumes that were
inherited from Middlesex University. Mrs. Harry L. Michaels was the
founder and first president of the BUNWC. From 1948 to 1995, the Women's
Committee raised over $60 million in support of the University Libraries.
In 1996 the BUNWC celebrated the library's acquisition of its millionth
book. The BUNWC also publishes a newsletter, "Imprint."
