Executive Committee minutes, Honorary Degree Committee minutes, and Nominating Committee minutes are RESTRICTED; access to these materials will be reviewed by the President's Office on a case by case basis. Permission to use restricted materials must be obtained from the Assistant Secretary of the Corporation, Office of the Board of Trustees.

History--Biography
The Board of Trustees is authorized to have up to fifty members who are responsible for and are the final authority on all aspects of the University's operations. The specific functions of the Board of Trustees are reflected by the standing committees of the Board: Academic Affairs; Audit; Budget and Finance; Development; Executive; Honorary Degrees; Investment; Health Services; Nominating; Personnel, Compensation and Ethics; Physical Facilities; and Student Affairs.

The Board of Trustees selects the president of the University who is responsible solely to the Board. In addition to the members, the Board also includes four faculty and three student representatives. Ex officio members include the chair of the Fellows, the president of the National Women's Committee, and the president of the Alumni Association. The officers of the Board include the Chair, Vice-Chairs, Treasurer, and Secretary. The Board of Trustees began in 1947 with George Alpert as its first Chair. Prominent trustees have included Leonard Bernstein and Eleanor Roosevelt. The current chair is Stephen B. Kay.

Scope and Contents
Files in this collection were created from 1946 through 2007. Materials include minutes of Board meetings, memos, reports, budget statements, correspondence, photographs, directories, and programs to special events. The materials pertain to general administrative information, including bylaws of the Board and financial reports concerning the University. Other files include special events and the work of various committees of the Board, particularly the Academic Affairs Committee and the Presidential Search Committee. Many reports and memos were written to or from the university President and senior staff. Some material in the Administrative Series were the personal copies of Clarence Berger. He worked closely with the Board of Trustees in his various senior positions including Dean of Administration and Executive Vice President from 1948 through 1973.

Presidential Search Committee

Arrangement: Chronological
This contains files from the presidential search committee of 1981
through 1982 which selected Evelyn Handler, the search committee of 1990
through 1991 which selected Samuel Thier, and the search committee of
1993 through 1994 which selected Jehuda Reinharz.  The files include
reports documenting the procedures of the committee and the general
process of selecting a university president; they include both paper
files and diskettes.  Some files from 1967 in the Committee Series deal
with presidential succession.  These files are restricted.

Financial Files

This series includes budgets, debt reports, and financial statements
concerning the economic status of the University. Additional financial
records are in the Committees Series under Budget and Finance.

Membership Files

This series includes board membership directories. Files on nominations
and appointments of individual members are in the Administrative Series.

Special Events
Inclusive Dates: 1948-1999, n.d.
Arrangement: Chronological
This series includes files documenting special events of the Board,
which include a dinner honoring Jacob Goldfarb, a celebration of Abram
Sachar's sixtieth birthday, Founder's Day celebrations, university
anniversaries, and commencement files. It also includes photographic
contact sheets of the inauguration of Morris Abram as the second
president of Brandeis University.

This series includes agendas, background information on faculty members,
and financial reports.  Board books serve as briefing books used by
board members to prepare themselves for Board meetings.  Board books are
a collection of meeting agendas; budget expenditures; statistics on
