History--Biography
Formerly known as the Office of the Special Assistant to the President for Equal Opportunity, the Office of the Associate Vice President and Affirmative Action Officer is responsible for developing and carrying out Brandeis University's affirmative action policies and ensuring the University's compliance with affirmative action laws. The University created its affirmative action program to ensure there was no discrimination at Brandeis--particularly in hiring practices-- and to coordinate recruitment of potential minority employees. The Office currently handles other equal opportunity issues such as sexual harassment and disabilities. The position of Assistant to the President for Affirmative Action was created in 1978 and first held by Herb Hentz. Previously, an Affirmative Action Coordinator was in charge of affirmative action policy at Brandeis. This position was held by Louis Ennis during the 1970s. The University also had Affirmative Action Officers, most notably Jack Goldstein and David Squire, and an Affirmative Action Advisory Committee. The Office also formerly produced the newsletter, "'aaction' profile."
