Software List

All of our computer software is freely available for community use. No reservation or registration is required to use our computers.

Please note that we cannot install any of our programs on your own computer.  Some of our software (such as the Adobe Creative Cloud apps) may be requested by faculty or staff for installation on University-owned computers.  Students may purchase their own copies of the software at any academic discount through Brandeis on the Hub or the Academic Superstore.

Video Editing Software:

Adobe Premiere Pro Creative Cloud

Premiere is our recommended all-purpose tool for video editing. It integrates seamlessly with other Adobe products for multimedia projects and can natively edit a variety of file formats.

Adobe After Effects Creative Cloud

After Effects is the perfect application for video compositing, post-processing and special effects. Traditionally used after all other editing is finished, you can also use it to "live-edit" your clips in Adobe Premiere—before you've even finished your movie.

Adobe SpeedGrade Creative Cloud

SpeedGrade is a powerful tool for color correction. Used in conjunction with Adobe Premiere, you can "live edit" your color corrections without having to export your movie first.

Avid Media Composer 7.0

Avid has been the industry standard for film editing for many years. Though it can edit some formats natively, for best performance you should transcode your files into Avid's MXF format.

Celtx is a robust screenwriting application. It features a variety of workflows including multi-sequence storyboarding.

Audio Editing Software:

Ableton Live

Live is one our sound engineering programs. It includes several instruments, robust MIDI support, and a variety of audio effects that you can apply with one click.

Adobe Audition CS6

Audition is our recommended all-purpose tool for audio editing. It has professional audio filters, advanced multi-track support, and remastering tools, all within an intuitive interface that can communicate with other Adobe programs.

This simple-to-use audio editor is perfect for quick-and-easy recording. It also has a limited number of audio filters, supports basic cutting/pasting, and has multi-track support.

Finale 2011

We use Finale primarily for notation (i.e. writing and preparing scores). The program also supports MIDI input via our in-lab MIDI keyboards and audio output via Garritan, Native Instruments, and Miroslav Philharmonik, though more advanced audio production should be done in a professional sequencer such as Logic Pro (below).

Garritan Instruments for Finale

Garritan is a world-renowned library of instrumental sounds to be used in a sequencer or notation editor. It includes most orchestra-related instruments (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion), as well as a basic choir and ethnic percussion.

Logic Pro X

Logic Pro is our recommended music sequencer. It supports audio and MIDI recording, sequencing, and looping. The program also has a "movie" view mode, in which you can create your audio alongside an integrated video player (ideal for film scoring).

Max is an object-oriented audio creation program, which allows you to create configurable sound "programs" rather than relying on static sound samples. You can also use Max with our in-lab MIDI keyboards, and can engineer your sound patches alongside an integrated video player.

Miroslav Philharmonik

This sound library features authentic sounds from -- you guessed it -- the Miroslav Vitous Symphonic Orchestra. The library, featuring strings, brass, winds, and orchestral percussion, can be used in any of our sequencers or notation programs.

Reason is a production studio with included sound samples and loops. Its interface is best geared towards sound mixing, beat-design, and audio engineering.

Sony Sound Forge

Sound Forge is an alternative to Adobe Audition, with just as many features. It supports audio recording and mastering, and has quick audio-repair tools.

Graphics Software:

Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud

Photoshop is our recommended all-purpose tool for image editing. You can use it for most any graphics project, whether it be designing a poster, touching up old photos, creating web graphics, or doing professional painting via a tablet.

Adobe Illustrator Creative Cloud

When you need vector-based design tools, Illustrator is the program to use. The program is very similar to Photoshop, making it easy to learn. Its vector format allows you to scale any illustrations you make with perfect clarity, making Illustrator ideal for logo design.

Adobe InDesign Creative Cloud

Adobe InDesign is the perfect program for poster and newsletter design. It combines many features of Illustrator and Photoshop, allowing you to work with both vector- and raster-based images.

Adobe Lightroom 5

Lightroom is a useful tool for adjusting exposure and applying filters to your raw camera footage—without having to learn Photoshop first. You can also work directly with your raw camera files; no import or conversion is necessary.

Autodesk Maya 2015

Maya is a professional 3d modeling and animation program. While it has a steep learning curve, the program has been used in many professional contexts, including game development and film. Maya is also very extendable; it has an internal scripting language that allows you to write your own plugins and use plugins designed by other users.

Autodesk Mudbox 2015

Mudbox is the perfect companion to Maya, offering a robust framework for 3d sculpting and painting.

Blender is somewhat easier to learn than Maya, but offers the same set of features. It also features an integrated physics engine (Bullet) and supports basic game engine scripting using Python.

Miscellaneous Software:

Adobe Dreamweaver Creative Cloud

Dreamweaver is an effective tool for web design, supports languages such as HTML, PHP, and JavaScript. The interface allows you to easily switch between a preview of your website and your website's underlying code.

Adobe Media Encoder Creative Cloud

Adobe Media Encoder allows you to convert between a variety of file formats. It supports image, video, and audio conversions, and is much faster than the leading competitor (Compressor).

DownloadHelper is a free Firefox plugin installed on all of our computers. It allows you to capture video and animations from almost any Flash player or plugin on the Internet. Our patrons typically use it to download YouTube videos at high quality, for use in video projects.

Editshare Connect

Editshare Connect is a utility that connects you to our high-speed server for file storage. It also hosts our Native Instruments library. Editshare space can only be used in the Getz Multimedia Lab and must be requested before use.

Handbrake allows you to rip DVD's onto your computer. It is most useful for ripping specific chapters of movies which can then be imported into Premiere for use as part of a video editing project, or uploaded to our Ensemble Video server for class streaming.

Toast Titanium

Toast Titanium is our all-purpose media converter and CD/DVD burner. Though Adobe Encore and Media Encoder each offer more options, Toast is easier to use for general-purpose conversion and DVD authoring.
