Identity Management

Identity Management (IDM) is the way that institutions keep track of the people and groups that make up its community in order to administer electronic access to services and facilities.

The functions of IDM are to authenticate that a person logging into a service is really who he says he is, and to provide credentialing information such as affiliation, role, and status so that systems, services, and facilities may determine the person's eligibility for access. IDM is a key component of how an institution protects the privacy and security of personal and institutional information. In addition, a modern IDM system provides many features to streamline administration of access privileges.
