Creating Inclusive Dialogue

Glossary Entry Example

Support diversity in your LATTE Course

LATTE team has created a Glossary of Inclusion and Diversity guidelines from the Posse Foundation. The guidelines are meant to help create inclusive dialogue across Brandeis.

Fill out this order form to add these terms to your LATTE course page as a “Random Glossary Entry” Block. Every time the page is refreshed, a new entry from the glossary will appear for your students to see.

Keep the list as it is, or add your own terms!

The list includes:

Share Responsibility

Ask everyone to share the responsibility of moving the dialogue forward.

Reach Out

Show care and concern. Be real and authentic.

Ask A Question

Sometimes a question is more powerful than an answer.

Think of people as experts of their own experience.

Practice Empathy

Put yourself in someone else’s shoes.

Sometimes people just want to be heard without rebuttal or advice.

Check Your Defense Mechanisms

If you are being challenged, check your defense mechanisms and be aware of where it’s coming from.

Pause To Process

Know when to interrupt the discussion to talk about what’s going on. Then know when to defer the conversation for a later time.

Consider Being Wrong

You don’t always have to be right. You can say you don’t know or admit that you might be wrong.

Know When to Condemn

There are some things that are unacceptable and won’t be tolerated. People need to hear you say that.

Fill out this form with the course name and number, semester the course is being taught, and permission to add the glossary to your course.
