February 2001, update of June 1988
Mark Alpert, Social Sciences Librarian
In the Undergraduate concentration, Politics courses are designed to develop an understanding of the various ways societies organize themselves to manage conflict and cooperation and to make and implement public policy.
The graduate program in Politics offers three degree programs leading to the degrees of Master of Arts in Politics, Doctor of Philosophy in Politics, or a joint Doctor of Philosophy in Politics and Social Policy with the Heller Graduate School. Grounded in the study of institutions and history of American and European politics, the program emphasizes scholarly research and writing on American political development, liberalism and its critics, comparative political institutions and public policy, and the United States in world politics.
The political science collection supports present and anticipated teaching and research in the field of political science and its related subdisciplines. The collection also supports, in part, several interdepartmental programs in the following areas: Latin American Studies, Legal Studies, Women's Studies, Russian and East European Studies, Environmental Studies, and Peace and Conflict Studies.
The general programs of the department are structured to provide instruction in political science for students wishing to gain an understanding of the political process in the contemporary world. The collections serve the needs of politics majors as well as those from other subject areas with related interests, primarily in the areas of history and the social sciences.
The collection represents a broad spectrum of research interests, including: comparative politics, East European politics, conflict resolution, political theory, constitutional law, international relations and world politics, Southeast Asian and Latin American politics, western European and American politics, Africana, international political economy, and the politics of East Asia.
