Near Eastern and Judaic Studies

II. Curriculum

Courses on the undergraduate and graduate level pertaining to the history, languages and cultures of the Ancient Near East, Israel and the Middle East, as well as all areas of Judaic studies and Jewish communal studies are offered by the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, the Hornstein Program for Jewish Communal Service and other academic departments.

III. Purpose and Scope of the Collection

The "Judaica" collection includes monographs (trade and scholarly publications), electronic resources, serials, government documents, audiovisual materials, manuscripts and archival collections pertaining to the following subject areas: the civilization of Canaan, Sumer, Babylon and Assyria; The Hebrew Bible; early Christianity; Jewish history, religion and culture throughout the ages; Rabbinic literature; Jewish philosophy, mysticism and thought; Hebrew language and literature; Yiddish language and literature; the Holocaust; Zionism, Israel and the Middle East; American Jewry; and the contemporary world Jewish community. The collection supports the research and instructional programs of the University. The Judaica Librarian maintains and develops the collection and serves as the LTS' liaison to the aforementioned academic departments.

XII. Subject Areas and Collecting Levels

  • American Jewry

    Primary and secondary source material pertaining to the American Jewish experience from the earliest settlement (1654) to the present are acquired. The following are examples of the subjects to be included:

    • American Jewish History (Colonial period to the present)
    • Jewish participation in American cultural, economic and political life
    • Anti-Semitism
    • Demographic and Economic Structure of the American Jewish community
    • Social and Cultural Life of the American Jewish community
    • Education and Religion
    • Jewish Women
    • Relations with religious and ethnic groups
    • The American Jewish community and world Jewry

    Level: Graduate study/ Research



  • Ancient Near Eastern Civilization

    Scholarly editions of selected religious legal and literary texts as well as scholarly studies pertaining to the following subjects are acquired:

    • Civilization of Ancient Mesopotamia (Sumer, Babylon and Assyria)
    • Northwest Semitic cultures with particular emphasis on the history and culture of these civilizations

  • Arabic Language and Literature

    Basic reference works, grammars, dictionaries, selected contemporary literary works primarily in English translation are acquired.

    Level: Undergraduate study



  • Early Christianity

    Basic reference works, selected text editions of the New Testament and commentaries, early Christian literature, as well as monographs pertaining to the historical development of Christianity in the first century are acquired. Acquisition is limited largely to materials in the English language

  • The Hebrew Bible

    Basic reference works, biblical archeology, critical text editions, critical, historical, literary and linguistic studies (monographs and serials) and commentaries pertaining to the books of the Hebrew Bible and Dead Sea Scrolls are acquired.

    Level: Graduate study



  • Hebrew Language and Literature (Ancient, Medieval, Modern) (see also Yiddish Language and Literature)

    Basic reference works, periodicals, linguistic studies, literary works (all genres) including works in English translation, literary criticism are acquired. Selected materials in other languages in Hebraic script, e.g. Ladino, are acquired on a selective basis

  • Holocaust

    Basic reference works, primary resources, periodicals, scholarly and popular studies, memoirs, pertaining to the Holocaust, its antecedents and aftermath are acquired.

  • Islam

    Basic reference works, selected religious texts, periodicals, scholarly works pertaining to such subjects as Islamic history, religion, relations with other cultures, the role of Islam in contemporary society, are acquired. Acquisition is limited largely to materials in the English language.

    Level: Undergraduate



  • Israel (see also Jewish History, Zionism, Modern Middle East)

    Basic reference works, primary source material, newspapers and periodicals, monographs and non-print materials pertaining to the history of the Yishuv, the establishment of the State of Israel, all aspects of Israeli culture, economic and political life, relations with other countries are acquired.

  • Jewish History (Ancient, Medieval, Modern) (see also American Jewry, Holocaust, Israel, Judaism, Zionism)

    Basic reference works, primary source material, newspapers and periodicals, monographs and non-print materials pertaining to all aspects of Jewish life in Israel and the Diaspora are acquired.

    Level: Graduate study



  • Jewish Philosophy, Mysticism, Thought (Ancient, Medieval, Modern), Hasidism

    Basic reference works, periodicals, scholarly studies, texts (manuscript and print editions) including critical text editions are acquired.

    Level: Graduate study



  • Judaism (see also Talmudic and Rabbinic Literature)

    Basic reference works, periodicals, monographs pertaining to such topics as the development of Jewish law and the principles of Judaism, Jewish life cycle, relation of Judaism to other religions, controversial works against the Jews, polemical works, Judaism in the lands of the Diaspora, streams of Judaism, basic texts are acquired.

  • Modern Middle East (see also Israel)

    Basic reference works, periodicals, major (mainly university presses) scholarly studies pertaining to history, culture, religious, political and economic life of the countries in the modern Middle East is acquired. Acquisition is limited to materials in the English and Hebrew language.

    Level: Undergraduate



  • Talmudic and Rabbinic Literature (including Jewish law) (see also Judaism)

    Basic reference and introductory works, scholarly works pertaining to various aspects of Talmudic and Rabbinic literature and Jewish law, texts (manuscript, print, critical editions are acquired.

    Level: Graduate study



  • Yiddish Language and Literature

    Basic reference works, grammars, linguistic studies, literary works (all genres) including works in English translation, literary works (all genres) including translations into English, literary criticism

    Level: Graduate study



  • Zionism (see also Jewish History, Israel)

    Basic reference works, periodicals, primary source material, and scholarly studies pertaining to the history of Zionism. Particular emphasis will be placed the history of the Zionist movement in the United States.
